Corbett Grade School
January 2023
Welcome Back from Winter Break!
Dear Families,
We are excited to begin 2023 at Corbett Grade School. Our Corbett PTA had a successful Book Fair in December, despite our crazy weather. Many thanks to the families who purchased books to help out our classroom libraries.
There are lots of exciting things in the next month or two. Students will be learning about the Ice Age and our fourth and fifth grade students will be participating in STARBASE PDX Stem program.
In addition, I am planning a Corbett Grade Principal Chat and would love some input on the best days and times to hold our chat. Here is a link to fill out the survey: GS Principal Chat Survey. Please complete the survey before January 9, 2023.

STARBASE PDX
Corbett Grade School fourth and fifth grade students will be attending STARBASE PDX once they return from the winter break. They will be traveling once a week for five hours each day for five weeks to receive 25 hours of STEM instruction. The goal in this program is to increase interest in science, technology, and mathematics for young students. This experience will allow our students some incredible hands-on educational experiences. The wonderful news is that there is no charge for this program!

Community Giving
Boxes of Love
During the month of December, Corbett Grade School supported a local nonprofit called The Boxes of Love Project. This organization was founded by one of our Corbett school parents! The mission of Boxes of Love is to provide babies, children and teens entering foster care with a large bin full of brand new clothing, shoes, pajamas, toiletries and other comfort items to call their own. Most children enter the foster care system with nothing other than the clothes that they are wearing, and it is the mission of The Boxes of Love Project to change this for children in our area. Founder, Lyndsee Wunn was amazed by the amount of donations that were collected. This project was so successful that we plan to have another drive during the month of February. Thank you to Desiree Chiu, her students, and Tanya Hayden for organizing this event at the grade school.
You can read more about Boxes of Love here http://www.boxesofloveproject.org/donate. "
Canned Food and Giving Tree Project
During our annual Canned Food Drive, we were able to support over eight local families with the donations received. In addition, four families received support from our school staff and community through our Project Giving Tree. In addition to this support, Corbett Fire Department and Helping Hands of the Columbia Gorge each sponsored two additional families and ensured that all had a bright holiday with plenty of gifts and food. Our students and staff always look forward to opportunities to give back to our community.
Student Illness Procedure
Reminder about when to keep your child home...
Students should remain at home when they have:
- Fever (100.4 or higher) or chills
- May return after 24 hours fever free without the use of medication
- Cough
- May return if the cough is improving
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- May return after 48 hours
- New rash or sores
- Red eyes with drainage
- Anyone who has symptoms of illness OR tests positive for COVID-19 should:
- Stay home and notify their child's teacher and the grade school office.
- cevans@corbett.k12.or.us
- 503-261-4236
- Wear a well-fitting, multi-layered mask around other people.
- If symptoms last longer than 24 hours, consider testing for COVID-19 or visit a healthcare provider.
- Our grade school has free COVID-19 home tests available, contact the office for more information.
If symptoms of illness appear while at school, students will wait in a space away from healthy students until they are picked up by a parent/guardian. Make sure the school has correct phone numbers so that someone can be reached in case your student needs to be picked up.
If you have health questions, call your school nurse or your healthcare provider.
