Weather permitting, Lynchburg will be able to witness the lunar eclipse on Sunday night. Starting around 10:30 pm, the full moon will gradually disappear until it reaches total eclipse at 11:29 pm, turning red! The moon will remain red until 12:53 am then will slowly emerge from Earth's shadow and return to its normal full moon state. Thanks to a grant, all 8th grade students will visit the James River Association next week to conduct water quality testing and learn about our watershed. We will not be swimming, but students should wear clothing and closed-toed shoes that may get a little wet or muddy. Permission forms and details have been provided to students and should be returned to Mrs. Cyphert as soon as possible.

The library will close to book checkouts ONLY on May 25.

All medications need to be picked up by May 27 from the clinic. Please be mindful that all emergency medications should remain until the last day of school. Any medications that are not picked up will be disposed of unless otherwise instructed.

All medications are to be picked up by a parent or guardian per Lynchburg City Schools policy. No medications are to be transported by students.

Please remember if your child will need to continue taking medication for the next school year, a new medication authorization form and/or action plan will need to be signed.

The dates below are the remaining days of testing and make-up and retake testing will be throughout the month of May as needed or allowed. The dates and times are:

May 17 - Math ALL levels (Main Testing)

May 18 - Math overflow or specific testing needs

The Day Before

• Charge chromebooks overnight
• Get plenty of rest

The Morning of Testing

• Bring your chromebook, charger and a pencil or two to school
• Eat a good breakfast
• Leave on time to get to school in time for the beginning of testing

At School on Test Day

• Go to the restroom and get water BEFORE the test begins
• Leave all personal belongings and/or turned off electronics in backpacks in the lockers (cellphones, electronic devices, purses, chromebook cases, etc.)
• Make sure to keep your chromebook and a pencil or two at your assigned desk
• Bring a book (paper copy) to read afterwards

We are preparing for our math SOL! Please check-in with your child and ask what topics are being reviewed in class. Be prepared for 5-10 math problems to be assigned for homework as well. A great day has been planned for the 8th graders to skate, play laser tag, and have fun with friends. In order to participate, 8th graders must maintain appropriate behavior and citizenship. From April 18, 2022 through May 12, 2022, students must not receive any referrals resulting in a suspension and/or receive more than two referrals resulting in AIA. In addition, students who owe any obligations, fines, or fees to the school are ineligible to attend until the obligation is paid in full. If students cannot attend after paying, no refunds will be given due to the fact that all money will have been paid to cover admission and transportation.

Cost

The cost of the trip will be $15. This includes transportation, admission to the facility and pizza with a drink for lunch. Payment will be accepted in full or in installments; however, payment in full must be received on or before May 13, 2022.

MONEY WILL BE COLLECTED IN SOCIAL STUDIES CLASSES ONLY FROM APRIL 18 - MAY 13 AT 8:45AM.

Time

Buses will leave LMS promptly at 9:30 am and return to LMS at approximately 2:00 pm.

What to Bring

If students do not wish to have pizza for lunch, please have them bring a packed lunch.

Permission Slips

Students will receive a letter with an attached permission slip. EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE TURNED IN BY 8:45 a.m. MAY 13.

Expunge Forms

Students who have been enrolled in High School Credit Courses, including Spanish, French, Earth Science, Algebra I or Algebra II will be receiving EXPUNGE forms from their teachers to bring home for a parent signature. If you choose to to have the year grade expunged, it will be completely erased from their transcript as if they never took the course. They will need to retake the course at EC Glass if they need that credit. Any SOL that is passed will be "held" in those courses until a credit is earned. These forms (one for each high school credit class) will need to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to LMS before June 30.

College Day

Eighth grade students will participate in College Day and a trip to University of Lynchburg on Tuesday, May 24. Be on the lookout for permission slips to come home in the next few weeks.

Ms. Kristen Williams is the new Head Cheerleading Coach at E.C. Glass! There will be interest meetings for those who would like cheer as follows:

Wednesday, May 18 at 2:30 pm - Anyone interested in trying out for football cheerleading for the 22-23 school year, please meet in the cafeteria at E.C. Glass.

Wednesday, May 25 at 6:00 pm - A meeting will be held via Zoom for anyone not able to attend the in-person meeting on May 18. It is recommended that LMS students attend this meeting.

Attendance to one of the meetings is mandatory since tryout requirements and expectations will be discussed.

Please remember that when you are coming to support our sports teams that there are no pets allowed. Should you have a pet during the event, you will be asked to remove the animal from the campus. Animals may not be left in vehicles for any length of time.

There is a sign posted as a reminder and personnel taking the tickets will also be enforcing this expectation.
