November 2023 Edition
Principals Corner: Lots to be thankful for this Thanksgiving Season!
Good morning Hawks families,
November is a month where we give dedicated time to reflect and give thanks. Our CPHS staff is so thankful for your continued partnership which we wholeheartedly felt during the parent/teacher conferences that wrapped up last week. Thank you to our wonderful parents for your willingness to work collaboratively on behalf of success for your student. It takes a village, and here at College Place our village is amazing!
November is also a time to give thanks to those that serve in our armed forces. Our upcoming Veteran's Day Assembly is put on by our ASB and has lined up a great guest speaker to come speak to our students about his experience serving in our armed forces. Additionally, on Nov. 7th all of our juniors will take the ASVAB assessment which is an exam we give every year to our class of 11th graders.
A few important date reminders as well in November:
Thursday, November 9: Veterans Day Assembly
Friday, November 10: No School; Veteran's Day Observed
Wednesday, November 22: Half Day Early Release
Thursday, November 23: No School; Thanksgiving Holiday
Friday, November 24: No School; Thanksgiving Holiday
In this edition of the Hawks Happenings newsletter you will learn more about upcoming opportunities including a Agriculture Science Community Listening Session being held in the evening of November 7 here at CPHS. Also, we share information about some events in early November, winter sports registrations, instructional shout-outs, and Five Star Hawks recognitions.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out at 509-522-3312.
Thank you and Go Hawks!

Instructional Shout Out! Ms. Paige Hockersmith
Ms. Hockersmith, along with all of our teachers in the math department, have been piloting a new curriculum that is really pushing our teachers to embrace more discussion and discourse rich strategies in the classroom.
"As a teacher, I am finding new ways to help students build on what they know, facilitate deeper understanding and connect for students the why behind the numbers. As an educator, I have found the students' critical thinking and problem solving skills increase in a 'non-traditional' way. I believe that my students are finding success with the new curriculum and it has been exciting to see how engaged they are in learning and talking about math. When I've asked my students how they feel about the Carnegie curriculum and how class is going, I've gotten mostly positive responses."
Students in Ms. Hockersmith class just this past week were digging into math standards and learning through a "Around the World" strategy where student experts taught math solutions to their peers in a gallery walk style procedure with kids moving around the room solving math problems.
We are excited about what this new curriculum and instructional style will do to increase student learning in math, and along with our elementary and middle school adoption of iReady K-8, hope to see our math scores increase over the next few years.
