Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,

As many may be aware, last fall, Hyde-Addison ES received a coveted DCPS Standing Ovation Award for “Building the Bridges for Students and Families” as presented by the DC Education Fund. (For those not familiar, it is similar to a school of the year type award.) Bridges are essentially about granting access and creating opportunities for those who might not otherwise have them. At Hyde-Addison ES, our “High 5” Priorities are grounded in building bridges. Our equity and anti-racism work has been at the forefront of our efforts. We are a diverse school community with many families from around the world and from every Ward in the District. With access and exposure to superb instructional practices and whole child supports, we have continued to narrow opportunity gaps for students and prove that all children can grow and achieve. This is in part due to a tremendous effort from the collective school community. We look forward to building upon those achievements.

As shared, the school plans to provide some key data points, throughout the year, as applicable. To start, each year DCPS families have the opportunity to share their feedback through Panorama Surveys. From the Spring of 2023 survey administration, the Parent Satisfaction Rating for Hyde-Addison ES was 91%, which was higher than the DCPS, DCPS Elementary Schools and Ward 2 averages.

Across DCPS, students in grades 3-12, also had the opportunity to share their feedback. Hyde-Addison ES students in grades 3-5 shared a student Satisfaction Rating of 97%, also higher than the DCPS, DCPS Elementary Schools and Ward 2 averages.

As a reminder, the Hyde-Addison ES team is excited to collaborate with families around our school priorities. Such engagement will include an Equity and Anti-Racism Task Force comprised of families, staff and community stakeholders. Additionally, the Hyde-Addison ES team will continue to share DCPS guidance and updates, as information becomes available. Thank you for providing school supplies to support your child’s learning during SY 2023-24, if you are able. The supply lists for SY23-24 can be found here. Click HERE to purchase a school supply kit through the PTA which will both help raise money for the school and take one item off of your to-do list!

If your family is in need of assistance purchasing school supplies for your child, please email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov to share your child's name and the grade level they will be in so we can ensure every child has equitable access to materials.

As previously shared, on Friday, July 21 at 10:00am the school administration will host a virtual meeting to share information and answer questions for families who are new to Hyde-Addison! There are no bad questions and we look forward to meeting the new members of our school community. The meeting link will be made available.

When you receive the family newsletter by email on Fridays, as well as most other school-wide correspondence, you have the option to click and view the newsletter in a web browser. Viewing the newsletter in a web browser enables automatic translation into over 20 languages as well as provides the option for increased visibility with high-contrast settings and increased font sizes.

Family Newsletters will continue to be archived on the Hyde-Addison website (https://hydeaddisondc.org/home) throughout the year for your reference.

We encourage every family to share a little bit of information about their child so that the teachers who will greet them on the first day already know a little bit about how to support them this year. Thank you to the 65 families who have completed this, thus far! Our teachers are so excited to meet their new students.

If you would like a Kids Ride Free Card for your student, please fill out this short form. They will be sent home in students' backpacks on Mondays once the school year begins. If you need yours prior to the start of the school year, call the main office after filling out the form to schedule a pickup time this summer.

Attendance is a priority of DCPS and Hyde-Addison, as we know regular school attendance is integral to student success. Please find the DCPS calendar, linked here and shown below, so that your family can plan events and vacations accordingly.

Last school year, DCIAA allowed Hyde-Addison to compete in girls and boys track (spring season) as well as girls and boys cross country (fall season). Once DCIAA informs us of what teams Hyde-Addison will compete in SY23-24, we will share that information.

There is no cost to families for a child to be on a DCIAA team. All students who wish to compete on a DCIAA team must complete a participation packet every school year which includes a physical by a medical professional. Additionally, the medical forms must be completed within 365 days of the end of the athletic season.

2. Universal Health Certificate (UHC). Students with certain medical conditions may also need to complete an Asthma Action Plan or an Anaphylaxis Action Plan

This school year, all forms must be completed and submitted for each student in advance of trying out for a team. We encourage you to go ahead and schedule your doctor appointment to complete this over the summer if your 4th or 5th grader may be interested in playing sports.

As we prepare to launch into school year 2023-24, we would like to invite new and returning families to join us for the engagement opportunities outlined below. Together, we will share important information, ask questions, and build connections as a school community.

The Hyde-Addison PTA is dedicated to supporting the school mission to provide an excellent academic environment and foster a strong, inclusive community. There are no dues or fees, and we welcome participation from all Hyde-Addison families! We have many exciting events and initiatives in the works and look forward to a more normal school year. Summer is a great time to have some fun while raising academic skills/readiness by reading, reading, and reading! Here are some special summer programs to keep you and your student going!

• Keep a record of 3 books you read this summer and receive a free book of your choice from Barnes and Noble through the Summer Reading program.
  
  
• Looking for some fun and low-key activities to do this summer that support literacy learning? Check out these great suggestions from Reading Is Fundamental (RIF).

DC Public Library has a Discover Summer gameboard for students! This year's prizes include Nats baseball tickets, a free Wendy's frosty, and more! It officially starts this Saturday, June 17th. The library is also sponsoring free museum days across the city and special events at library locations.

This year there is one gameboard for all ages, so the whole family can participate! While signing up online enters participants for raffles, you can also just use the gameboard and return it to any DC Public Library by August 31st for prizes (while supplies last). If anyone has participated in the last few years, they most likely have an account already online and it just needs to be updated.
