One School, One Book: Matilda
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Our School is about to take part in a special, communitywide shared reading event. Every child will receive a copy of the same book, Matilda by Roald Dahl, and will be asked to read it together at home over the next few weeks. We are personally asking you to make the time so that your family can participate in this special activity.
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With this program, we aim to build a Community of Readers at our school. Everyone, students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff, will all be following along together.
Along with the book, you will receive a reading schedule so that you can keep up at home. Generally, you will be asked to read about 15 minutes each night.
In school, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward active listening. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. In class, students can explore the book through activities and discussion. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so that your child can be included. Throughout the month, everyone will be talking about Matilda!
This is a novel program in that children of all grade levels will all be listening to the same book. Strange or daring as that may seem, it actually makes sound educational sense. Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. We also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be followed and understood and enjoyed by younger students, but will still captivate and stimulate older children.
We know that you’ll enjoy this special reading time with your children. With your help, we can build a Community of Readers at our school.

PSSA Reminders
Dear East Fallowfield Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade Families,
Beginning on Monday, April 25th, our third, fourth and fifth grade students will take the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) tests. The annual Pennsylvania System School Assessment is a standards-based, criterion-referenced assessment which provides students, parents, educators, and citizens with an understanding of student and school performance related to the attainment of proficiency of the academic standards. These standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science and Technology identify what a student should know and be able to do at varying grade levels. Every Pennsylvania student in grades 3 through 8 is assessed in English Language Arts and Math. Every Pennsylvania student in grades 4 and 8 is assessed in science.
These assessments will be administered on the following days:
English Lang. Arts April 24th to April 26th - Grades 3, 4, & 5
Math May 1st to May 2nd - Grades 3, 4, & 5
Science May 3rd to May 4th - Grade 4
The 2023 state PSSA Cell Phone and Electronic Device Policy is included below. During the assessment dates, we encourage students to leave cell phones and electronic devices like smart watches at home.
PSSA REMINDERS FOR TEST TAKERS AND FAMILIES
To ensure student success and accuracy on the assessments, we ask for your help with the following:
- Encourage your student to leave electronic devices at home
- Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep on the nights before testing.
- Provide a nutritious breakfast for your child. Breakfast is served daily at Rainbow free of charge.
- Be sure your child arrives at school on time. Children who arrive to school late (after 10:00 a.m.), will not be permitted to join the testing in progress. They will be supervised until the test is over and will have to make up the missed session later.
- Be mindful of your child’s stress levels and reassure her/him that she/he can do this. The tests are not timed. We want students to feel confident that they are test ready as they have worked hard and learned much this year.
- Make-up sessions may occur during the afternoon. So, if your child needs to leave early for an appointment, please notify us before the start of the school day. If a child begins a test session, and leaves, she/he may not finish it later. Also, please try to schedule appointments for your child on non-testing days.
