Greetings Cottonwood Families

January Newsletter to Parents


Cougar Families,

I hope you all had a wonderful Winter Break. Our staff is rested and ready to finish the year strong. I am excited about our first Coffee with the Principal in our library classroom on January 11th at 8:30 am. I hope to see many of you there to talk about any ideas, plans, or concerns you may have about your scholars’ education.


In the spirit of community, we are asking our parents/guardians/staff, and students to help us safeguard one another so that we can continue to focus on student learning. With the Flu, RSV, and COVID, many of our scholars are getting sick. Here are some ways you can help:


  • Review proper handwashing and hand sanitizing techniques with your student.

  • Keep your student at home if he/she is showing signs of illness.

  • Students should remain at home until all symptoms have resolved without needing to take any fever-reducing medication within 24 hours.


We understand this is a time of uncertainty and concern. Thank you for continuing to work with us to keep our students, families, and staff healthy and safe. As always, we are here to serve. Please feel free to reach out if you have any needs and hope to see you at the coffee with the principal.

Jamba Juice will be on campus selling smoothies for $3.00 during lunch.

Elementary Awards Assemblies - January 13th from 8:45-9:30 a.m.

Elementary students are being recognized for academic, spirit, and character excellence for Quarter 2.

MS Awards Assembly - January 13th from 9:45 -10:45 a.m.

MS Students are being honored for excellence in character, spirit and academics for the first semester.

Middle School Winter Ball - January 13th 6-8 p.m.

Cottonwood's Middle School students are invited to attend the Winter Ball Formal. Tickets are $10. Students must meet eligibility requirements in order to attend.

MLK Day - No School - January 16th

In observance of MLK Jr. School is not in session.

Saturday School - January 21st

Saturday School is a fun way to earn back attendance credit and have a lot of fun. Saturday School hours are 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

The Great Kindness Challenge - January 23rd-27th

Students around the world come together to engage in acts of kindness.

The 100th Day of School - January 25th

Time to celebrate 100 days of learning scholars! Come to School Dressed Like you are 100 Years Old!

Elementary School Parent Teacher Conference Week - January 23rd-27th

Elementary Students will be released early all week at 1:35 p.m. for Parent Conferences to be held after dismissal. The SAFE Program will keep students from dismissal until 6:00 p.m. if needed.

Middle School Parent Teacher Conference Day is January 26th

Middle School students will be dismissed at 1:35 p.m. so that parents can conference with the Middle School Teachers.

Middle School Basketball Tournament - January 26th

The Middle School Basketball Tournament will take place on Thursday, January 26th, at Borrego Springs.

District Spelling Bee - January 31st

The winners from Cottonwood's Spelling Bee will compete at the district level. Congratulations and Good Luck.

Cougar Corner

For the month of January, Cottonwood will focus on the character trait of loyalty. The word Loyalty means showing my commitment through difficult times.


The characteristics of Loyalty are:


  • I will care about people.
  • I will help those in need.
  • I will serve my community.
  • I will encourage others in the right direction.



In order to help us reinforce Loyalty feel free to send in pictures of your child demonstrating Loyalty to (aniaves@hemetusd.org) so that we can celebrate their efforts.
