LASD's 2023 Summer Programs
LASD will host two summer school sessions this year from June 11-July 23 and July 12-July 28 to serve our students who require additional academic help.
One is our Extended School Year program that will provide a half-day of education for identified students in special education from preschool through 8th grade. The other is our LASD Summer Intervention program that will provide additional literacy and math instruction, as well as help for students requiring an additional boost to achieve grade level standards. Furthermore, LASD will host a Camp with “Right at School" that will provide more summer fun and education for students grade TK-5 who are requiring additional academic instruction, are English Language Learners or other students who currently qualify for State of California’s Expanded Learning Opportunities Program.
Students who qualify for these programs have been invited to participate this month.
We're very excited for a wonderful summer of learning and fun! For more information, check out item I.3. on our agenda online.
Special Education Update
This year our special education teachers took special care to address traumas our students in and out of special education classrooms experienced during the pandemic by putting into practice "trauma informed education." Teachers trained in trauma informed education give students choice, use inclusive language, and activate tools that have worked before to help students regulate their behavior when acting out. And when the student is on the other side of an episode, they are encouraged to self reflect. New behavior specialists also assisted our students and teachers in our special education classrooms, collaborating with staff and families, and providing direct support to students. As possible, students in special education participated in mainstream classes to ensure educational equity and inclusion.

Board Approves Participation in Teacher Housing Project
The Board unanimously approved LASD's expanded participation in an exciting new project to support teacher and staff housing in our area. With the cost of living skyrocketing in our area, many of our teachers and staff cannot afford to live in the community they serve.
For that reason, the Los Altos School district is participating alongside our neighboring school districts to build the Educator Workforce Housing Project at 231 Grant Avenue in Palo Alto. The project will consist of 110 apartments that will provide affordable rent to public school employees.
As a contributor to the project, LASD employees, with this modified funding agreement, are guaranteed 24 units in the project. The $1.2 million required to participate in this project is coming from rental income generated by properties owned by LASD.
