September 3rd, 2020
(This message is for Ewing Young students and families. I apologize for any COA families that are receiving this message. Once school enrollments are all finalized we will be able to separate out email lists.)
Welcome back EY Families
Our work will obviously look different this fall. The rich experiences we are able to offer to our kids in a regular school year, though not impossible, will be difficult to provide due to access to one another in person as well as materials, equipment, and technologies students typically only have access at school. Instead, our energies will be most effective geared toward finding ways to bolster connection and give our students a reason to continue to tune in to what we have to offer day after day until we get to have them back with us. Change is inevitable and we will take advantage of finding ways to provide meaningful experiences first through connecting with kids and by challenging them to learn at deeper levels.
We could get down and look at all that is lost this year and I feel it! We all take pride in watching our kids grow in the opportunities normally offered at Ewing Young and it’s sad that we, most likely, won’t be able to provide those in the same fashion anytime soon. Thankfully, we do have an innovative staff and an opportunity to try some new things that will aid in our connections with kids, raise engagement, and still provide amazing experiences, perhaps just a little different.
We all want the same thing - our kids to thrive and to enjoy learning! I challenge each of us to look past what we are familiar with, and what we have always done and embrace perhaps our greatest asset, our creative spirit in discovering what helps our kids grow. I feel as though this might be a fun opportunity for us all!

Technology & Material Pick-up
This year we are providing paper copies of our curriculum to support the students as they are navigating distance learning. In addition to our paper materials, we realize that some families need a Chromebook or hotspot for internet access. We will be having a drive-through technology and material pick up for students Wednesday, September 9th from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.
If you have a device that was assigned to your student it will be used for the 20-21 school year. If that device is NO longer working please fill out the attached Google Form to let us know that you need to exchange the device.
If you need to check out a device, please fill out the attached Google Form to ensure we have the necessary devices ready to go.
Please drive through the front parent pick-up line and remain in your car. We will have someone bring you the classroom materials and devices you need to your car.
Welcome Kindergarten Students
Please be on the lookout for a separate email to schedule the visits!
First Days
Monday, September 14th First Day of Distance Learning: The first day of distance learning is scheduled for September 14th. Prior to the start of the year we will be reaching out to families of 1st through 5th grade students to schedule pre-conferences. While we can not do this in person, we will be setting up a video conference with each of our families. This will provide you an opportunity to meet your child's teacher and for your teacher to learn more about your child. We will cover information about the school year, our comprehensive distance learning, and answer questions you may have. We are excited to meet with each of you as we believe the school-home partnership is critical!
Food Service
We have good news that allows us to make sure more students get the food they need. On Monday August 30, the USDA announced that we are able to operate the Summer Food Service Program until the end of December. This will allow any child age 1-18 to eat for free. We are going to continue with the delivery model that we have planned, and want to encourage everyone to take part in this. Deliveries will be on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11am–1pm.
Even though this means anyone who signs up will be able to eat for free, I want to encourage all of you to still fill out the free/reduced meal application. We do not know if we will be allowed to continue with the Summer Food Service Program in January. It would be good to have this on file with any direction we go. In addition, those who apply and qualify for free/reduced lunch receive other benefits, like discounted fees associated with classes, sports and testing.
If you are signing up for the first time, use the Meal Delivery Sign Up link below. If you have already signed up for meal delivery and need to add children, please contact Naomi Adams at 503-554-4725. adams@newberg.k12.or.us
Please contact your school office, counselor or the nutrition department with any questions.
Here is a link- for more information and to submit an online free/reduced meal application.
