Background

Women of color who protect themselves from unrelenting violence are, very often, criminalized themselves. “No Selves to Defend” features the stories of some of these women, including Marissa Alexander, a survivor and mother sentenced to 20 years in prison for defending herself from violence.

The exhibition also addresses the campaigns and mobilizations that emerged to resist their criminalization and demand their freedom. Finally, it considers how we can support current survivors of violence who have been criminalized for self-defense.

The exhibition includes original art by Micah Bazant, Molly Crabapple, Billy Dee, Bianca Diaz, Rachel Galindo, Lex Non Scripta, Caitlin Seidler, and Ariel Springfield, as well as artifacts from Mariame Kaba’s collection. It is co-curated by Rachel Caidor and Mariame Kaba.

You can purchase a copy of the anthology "No Selves To Defend" at the Free Marissa online store: http://www.zibbet.com/FreeMarissaAlexander/artwork?artworkId=2318730 - all proceeds support Marissa's legal defense.
