Avilla Elementary Family Newsletter
December 2023
Avilla Families,
I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving holiday. We are just a few short weeks away from our winter break for school. Students attend school until December 19 and our winter break is from December 20 through January 2. Students return to school on Wednesday, January 3.
You can find a lot of school event and school day pictures online on our Facebook page. Simply search for Avilla Elementary and give us a follow.
Please contact me if you have any questions or feedback for me to consider. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your child's growth!

Middle of Year Assessments
Our teachers and students experience many schedule changes between now and winter break for middle of year testing. Students are being assessed on their reading progress with individual benchmarking. This process started on November 27 and will be completed on December 8. Each student is assessed one time during this timeframe, with each assessment taking around 15-30 minutes.
We also conduct comprehensive reading and math assessments online through our Ready curriculum component. This assessment helps to place students into iReady individual instructional modules and also serves as another level of information for teachers to gain a better understanding of student growth and ability. Ready diagnostic tests are scheduled at various times per grade level and will be finished by December 15.

A Message From our Avilla Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO)
How are we already in December? This year is flying quick! We still have so many events coming up in the next few months! The Avilla PTO would like to thank everyone who supported the November popcorn/goldfish fundraiser. Please keep watching for an update on how that turned out! Your support allows the PTO to give back to the students/staff of Avilla Elementary! Coming up this month will be the annual Claus’ Closet shopping experience. Please watch for more information to be coming home soon. We will need volunteers for this event. If you would like to volunteer, please make sure you have a current background check on file with the school. Information on how you can assist is coming soon! We will also be launching a new directory soon! This will be strictly opt in only. If you want to have your information available allowing other parents to contact you personally, you will need to complete a form. This will be an annual project in which you will need to complete the information each year. This will allow parents who wish to remain unlisted to remain unlisted. More information on how to participate in this directory is coming. If you would like to purchase a PTO volunteer shirt there are forms available on the PTO Facebook page. Our next meeting will be on Monday 12/4/23 at 3:30 in the school library. Please consider joining and let your voice be heard!
Car Line Reminders
Our car line is very long in the morning and afternoon. Our number one priority is student safety. If you are picking up or dropping off your child, please do not park in our lot across the street and walk across to the sidewalk. This creates safety and time issues for our line. We need everyone to join the car line and remain in cars for safety and efficiency. Here are a few tips to keep your time in line shorter:
- Please do not allow your students to leave your car until adult supervision is visible on the sidewalk in the morning. There is no supervision before our doors open.
- Consider joining our line closer to drop off and pick up times. On Mondays our doors open at 8:30 and Tuesday through Friday at 7:45. Arriving in advance will simply lead to waiting in line.
- We dismiss daily at 2:45. Our preschool families need the car line space for their afternoon dismissal.
