Weekly Update May 27, 2022
Head Cheetah's Message
Dear Families,
Happy Memorial Day! While enjoying the three day weekend, we hope you will take a moment to reflect on Monday’s holiday. Please join me in sending love to anyone who has lost a friend or family member while serving in the armed forces. Our thoughts are with you. And to those who have friends or family members who are currently serving…. May they all return home safely.
In addition to our observance of Memorial Day, I know that our hearts are all heavy after this week’s senseless tragedy. As educators and caregivers, we are often tasked with putting on a “brave face” for our students, even when we may not feel like the strongest version of ourselves; and I know how difficult it must have been for everyone to demonstrate bravery when sending their children to school on Wednesday morning. We all want our students to end the school year strong… feeling safe, loved, and accomplished – especially after all that the last couple of years have thrown at us. Tuesday’s tragedy makes that goal feel difficult; but we will do everything we can to ensure that our final weeks together are full of joy and fond memories. As a primary building, I know we will do our best to continue to shield our young learners from the ugliest aspects of our world, and we will fill their days with laughter, warmth, and safety.

Writing Celebration
Our annual Writing Celebration was a huge success! Throughout this week, our students proudly showed off how much they've grown as writers. Our families were amazed to see our young writers' growth. Many families asked if the binders would be coming home. They'll come home soon!!!
PBIS Assembly
On Friday, May 27, 2022 we held our first grade level assemblies in TWO years! We talked about perseverance, got excited about summer reading and math challenges, celebrated all of our students' hard work this year, cheered on the classroom teachers in minute-to-win-it challenges, and even had visits from the MEMORIAL CHEETAH! And, at the end of the grade 3 assembly, Mrs. DeGross bravely allowed Mrs Bauer & Mrs. Montovani to cut off her braids. She'll be donating her hair to an organization that supports children with hair loss.

Library News
Hi Cheetah families!
May is well under way in the Memorial School Library!
See below for grade level classroom expectations.
PreK students are enjoying a variety of read alouds and songs with the themes of bugs, animals, and summer.
Kindergarten is continuing their work around coding. We are learning to create basic sequences by using our new beebots. Students also enjoyed listening to Snail Crossing, Cinco de Mouso, and Chicks and Salsa, and No More Naps.
First grade students continue to build their coding skills by using the beebots, our coding robots. We are also having fun with lego challenges, and listening to fractured fairy tales.
Second graders are having fun with lego challenges and are listening to Wayside School is Falling down or one of the Weird School books.
Third grade has transitioned into devoting the spring reading The Wild Robot. This is in preparation for Center School’s Summer Reading; One School, One Book. Students are really enjoying this book, some have even gone ahead to finish it on their own!

Grade 3 Center School Visit
We are excited to announce that grade 3 students will be visiting Center School on Friday, June 3rd! In order to maximize the time that our students are able to spend there, students will go straight to Center School that day. If your student rides the school bus, they will be getting off the bus at Center School that morning, as opposed to Memorial School. Center School staff members will board the bus upon arrival to greet the students and guide them into the school. If you typically transport your child to school, we ask that you drop your student off in the Center School circle between 8:25-8:40. The grade 3 teachers will meet the students at Center School. Lunch will be provided by the Center School cafeteria staff. Or, if you prefer, you may send a lunch with your child. Once everyone arrives, our students will adhere to the following schedule:
8:45-9:20 Introductions and Teacher Panel Q&A
9:20-9:30 Transition to Classrooms
