MASSABESIC HIGH SCHOOL
2023-2024

August 20, 2023
Only 10 days remain before we welcome the Class of 2027 to the MHS campus! This newsletter contains important information for our students and families as we prepare for the opening of school. As always, let's continue the tradition of a STRONG & PROUD MUSTANG NATION!
Note from the Principal
Excitement is increasing as we begin this week by welcoming our new staff members to campus for a few days of orientation and training. Following these two days we will have our returning staff join us to continue preparing for the upcoming school year.
MHS West has undergone some impressive renovations this summer - most notably is the new gymnasium floor and our completed window project. You will also notice some tiling work in some hallways, offices, and classrooms. It is important that we do all we can to continue the upkeep of our building, and I know we will work together to be proud of our spaces. MHS may not be new, and we certainly have more work to do, but we can take pride in keeping our spaces tidy, undamaged, and clean. We can, and should, all take care of our building from picking up the smallest scrap of paper to helping to clean the largest water spill - we all have responsibility in this environment and we must all pull together.
We have seen a large increase in the number of students engaging in athletics in the early going of our preseason activities (well over 200 student-athletics) - this is wonderful news! We hope to add even more students to MHS athletics in the coming days (see more information below). I encourage every student to become engaged in school activities through the numerous opportunities of clubs, troupes, and teams. Athletics does not have to be the way you engage with the school community beyond your classes - please speak directly to your guidance counselor to discuss these opportunities. If transportation, and distance to your home, is a hindrance, we are providing a late bus each week so students may stay after school to participate. I believe strongly that the more students become involved in the school the happier they become and the more success they experience.
No matter how you are feeling about the start of the school year I can assure you that our staff are ready to welcome you to another year of learning. (I can hear the collective groans from some of you at the thought of classes and work, but I know you will be fine) It is important that we commit our energy and focus toward personal growth in many academic and social areas. Your time in high school is fleeting, although you may think it is passing by at a snail's pace, and in that time you can prepare yourself for the future. I am very much looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting many new ones. I am confident that we are poised to have a wonderful and successful school year. See you soon!
-Mr. Thurlow
