As a school of choice, our mission at Clark-Shaw Magnet School is to develop students into globally aware and productive citizens who excel academically and are responsible, courteous, life-long learners. This will be accomplished by providing a challenging curriculum in a safe and nurturing environment.

Can you believe we are at the end of 1st Quarter? Time does fly when you are having fun while learning something new. The quarter officially ends October 8, 2021. This gives your student a few more days to earn those final points. Remember students must maintain 70% in all classes to remain in the magnet program. Take a few minutes weekly to review your child’s grades and attendance. This will help keep your student on track for success.

The school year started out a bit rocky; we faced several challenges that we met head on and together we will continue to excel. As we begin 2nd Quarter on October 12, 2021, it is vital that our students understand the importance of adhering to timelines, meeting deadlines, and focusing on responsibilities. We have the best students in Mobile County, so I know they can do it. If you have any questions of concerns, contact your child’s teacher or the grade level administrator. This year's Homecoming Week included some new features which will hopefully become traditions at Clark-Shaw. In addition to Homecoming Queen, three new titles were introduced: Homecoming King, Mr. Football, and Ms. Volleyball. Candidates were from the 8th grade and were selected by a school-wide vote. Paris Jiles won Homecoming Queen and Malik Jackson won Homecoming King. London Wells was named Ms. Volleyball, while Todrick Withers was named Mr. Football. Congratulations to everyone!

Our Clark-Shaw Eagles football team has given us a lot to cheer about this season! They have won every game they have played except for a 2-0 loss to Calloway-Smith. They capped off Homecoming Week with a big win over Phillips Prep. They have one last regular season game vs. Scarborough on October 7th (updated 10/5). If you can, come out and cheer on the Eagles at Scarborough! Tickets can be purchased at GoFan (link). Congratulations to players and coaches for a great season!

The regular season has come to an end for the Clark-Shaw Eagles Volleyball Team. The great news is that we made the playoffs, and we will be playing Denton here at home on Monday, October 4. Please come out and support us! I am so proud of these girls! None of them had played volleyball before, but their work ethic and determination shined through. The regular season ended with the girls winning 4 out of 8 games. I will be starting the new season in April 2022, so upcoming 7th and 8th grade girls, get ready. The sign-up fee will be $25 per student and that will include a t-shirt, water bottle, and training from outside volleyball players and coaches. The Clark-Shaw Dance Team will hold tryouts on October 6 & 7 from 3:00- 4:00 pm in the Rec Room. To try out, students must sign up and complete all forms on the Dance Team website: link. There is a $10 try-out fee. See Mrs. Burch or Mrs. Hester for further details.

Did you miss Picture Day? A photographer for Jim Owen Studios will be here on the morning of Friday, October 15th for any student or staff member who did not have their portrait taken on Sept. 24. The office will announce when students should report to the gym by teams or grade levels. Students who are having their picture taken must be in full uniform with no spirit shirts allowed. Order forms have already been sent home but can be requested from Mrs. Van den Bosch, Room 209, dvandenbosch@mcpss.com.

Orders can now be placed for the 2021- 2022 yearbooks. The cost is $35. Payments can be made by cash or check (made payable to Clark-Shaw) and given to Mrs. Van den Bosch, Room 209. Please include the student's name and homeroom when turning in your payment. Orders can also be placed using a credit card at www.yearbookordercenter.com.

Parents and families of current 8th graders may purchase personal ads for their students for the 2021-2022 yearbook. The current cost is $30 for a 1/4 page ad, $50 for 1/2 page ad, and $100 for a full page ad, and the cost of the yearbook is $35. Prices will go up after the end of 2nd Quarter, so be sure to reserve your spot before December 17! Send payments (cash or check payable to Clark-Shaw) to Mrs. Van den Bosch, Room 209. Requests can also be sent to dvandenbosch@mcpss.com. Online sales for yearbooks only (no ads) can be done using a credit card at www.yearbookordercenter.com.

Student Council is active at Clark-Shaw once again! Homeroom representatives were elected in late September, and school-wide elections for officer positions will be held October 5th. The Eagle Eye News has been showing brief campaign videos by the officer candidates, and candidates have also been campaigning around school with posters. Get to know these students, hear their ideas, and be ready to vote on October 5th!

Get to Know..... Nurse Jolene Walker!

Nurse Walker has been a nurse for almost 11 years and a school nurse for almost 3 years. She says "I absolutely love what I do!" She has two children, Ethan (17) and Sidney (8), and she has been married to her husband Daniel for 20 years. She also has a sweet little shih tzu named Daisy. She loves to serve in her church and have been on multiple mission trips doing medical and evangelical mission work in Guatemala, a country in Central America.

Mrs. Houston, 7th grade science teacher here at Clark-Shaw Magnet School, was recently named a 2021 Shell Science Lab Regional Challenge Winner and awarded a grant worth $10,000. Pictured with her are Mandi Richardson and Nick Cavalier from Shell Chemical and Timesha Taylor-Jackson, principal of Clark-Shaw. The grant will fund supplies and equipment for our school’s life science lab. This marks the second award for our school from Shell Chemical this year. Melissa Story, 6th grade science teacher, was named the middle school grand prize winner for the 2021 Shell Science Lab Regional Challenge earlier this year!

Parents and guardians, did you know you can check your child's grades and progress online? You can do so by setting up a parent account in Schoology. With a parent account, you will receive automatic Schoology reports on Friday evenings or you can log in anytime to see up-to-date information, which includes grades, teacher comments, and missing or upcoming assignments. Earlier this summer, the Clark-Shaw Magnet School gym got a new name! In a ceremony attended by 150 former players, students, and supporters, our gym was officially dedicated to long-time Shaw High basketball coach William C. “Bill” McElroy, who coached at Shaw High School from 1965 to 1993. Our gym is now the "Coach Bill McElroy Gymnasium" in his honor. Congratulations!

Registration fees of $120 are due the first week of October. Only those who have paid will be able to be registered for the first tournament. All tournaments have a $2 spectator fee for adults, while children are free.

Students should bring their fully-charged Chromebooks and chargers to school each day. Personal laptops or tablets may not be used. When directed by teachers, students may use their Chromebooks to complete assignments and access approved educational websites. Students should not open tabs or windows to any sites not directed by the teacher. Any unauthorized use may result in disciplinary action and/or loss of privilege.

Students may have a pair of earbuds or headphones to use in class when appropriate, but these should only be used with teacher permission and should not be worn outside of class.

Attention all 8th graders and their parents/guardians! It's time to consider your choices for high school. Mobile County Public Schools allows students to apply to high schools outside of their zoned school through the signature academy program. A Signature Academy Showcase will be held virtually on October 19 from 4:30 - 6:30 pm. Representatives from all 12 high schools will be on hand to answer questions about their signature academies.

Make sure you have the supplies you need to showcase your science fair work! You do not have to buy your science fair board through the school, but doing so is convenient and will ensure you have the correct size and type of display. Orders for Science Fair tri-fold boards can be pre-ordered in the library through October 8th. A full set is $12 and includes the tri-fold board, header, and title sets, each available in a variety of colors. Order forms are available in the library or can be accessed using this link. Orders must be turned in by October 8, 2021.

Red Ribbon Week is planned for October 25 - 29th. We will celebrate by pledging (school-wide) to each live a safe and drug free life. The theme for each day is as follows, and students are expected to otherwise be in full uniform throughout the week:

• Monday: Drug-free awareness pledge
• Tuesday: "Put a cap on drugs" (red hat day)
• Wednesday: "Proud to be drug-free" (red shirt day)
• Thursday: "Future too bright" (neon color shirt day)
• Friday: "Team up against drugs" (favorite team jersey/t-shirt day)

We are happy to announce an addition to the Clark-Shaw family! Robert Thomas Peabody was born August 7th, 2021 at 12:50pm. He was 7lbs, 10oz. and 19.5" long. Coach Peabody will return from maternity leave during the 1st week of October, so be sure to congratulate her!

A special STEM Celebration Assembly was held September 3rd for our 8th grade students in recognition of our school's attainment of Cognia's prestigious STEM Accreditation in 2020. Michael Green (a.k.a. the Science Machine) from Science for Everyone performed for each half of the 8th grade. Students and teachers enjoyed his presentation, which was filled with facts, demonstrations, jokes, and audience participation!

Please remember that face masks are still required at school. Please make sure that your student has one each day when arriving to school. If your student is exhibiting any signs or symptoms of an illness, please keep them home and have them evaluated by a doctor. Symptoms of Covid include fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, fatigue, headache, muscle and body aches, new loss of taste and smell, sore throat, runny nose or congestion, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Your student should be fever free without medication for 24 hours before returning to school. If you or someone in your home tests positive for Covid, please keep them home and contact the nurse for further instructions. Furthermore, if your student or someone in your home is being tested for Covid, please do not send them to school until you have the results. If you have any questions regarding Covid, medical needs or medication needs, please do not hesitate to reach out to the nurse, Mrs. Jolene Walker RN, at jhwalker@mcpss.com or by calling the school at 251-221-2106.
