Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,

On January 13, 2023, the Hyde-Addison ES 5th grade students will participate in the annual History at the Lincoln program, a collaboration between DCPS and the National Park Service. Several schools within the district will share speeches, poems, and songs previously delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, by historical figures. I will provide opening remarks, on behalf of the district and the program is slated to begin at 10:30am.

If you have not already done so, please save the date and RSVP for the Student Success Showcase. It will take place on January 24, 2023, at 5:00pm, in honor of our DC Public Education Fund, Standing Ovation Award. We will come together as a school community to celebrate. Hyde-Addison Elementary School

Current students and their parents/guardians are invited to a special evening celebration! For adults, there will be a showcase event and for students there will be celebrations by grade band to honor all of their hard work and success over the years. Dinner will be served for both adults and students and tickets, while free, are required to attend. RESERVE TICKETS FOR BOTH ADULTS AND CHILDREN HERE.

Hyde-Addison ES will be hosting a DCPS middle school fair in the gym on Tuesday, February 7, 2023. There will be representatives from many DCPS middle schools who are excited to speak directly with students and families. Any parents or guardians who would like to attend with their 4th or 5th grade students are invited to come from 8:10-8:40am. Students who are not supervised by a parent/guardian will have the opportunity to attend a later session with their teacher. No RSVP is required.

Beginning on January 3, 2023, all students in grades Kindergarten through 5 must have a signed permission form on file in order to walk or take public transportation home alone or with a sibling. No student will be allowed to leave school alone or with a sibling until the attached form has been signed and returned to the main office or emailed to hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov. Please note that PreK3 and PreK4 students are not eligible.

Before returning this form, please:

• ·Walk or review with your child on the route(s) they will use to travel to and from school.
• ·Be sure that your child knows their address, your phone number, and where to go or who to contact if there is an emergency.
• ·Discuss safe walking behaviors with your child, including crossing streets safely at intersections with crossing guards, marked crosswalks, or other safe locations. Please also keep in mind that the Hyde-Addison playground is NOT available for student use after school dismissal because it is reserved for the Champions afterschool program.

This form is only required for students who are walking or taking public transportation home without their parent, guardian, or another adult who is authorized to pick them up. Please return a separate signed form for each of your children, should you like.

If you would like a Kids Ride Free Card for your student, please fill out this short form. They will be sent home in students' backpacks on Mondays.

Help raise money for the PTA and enjoy a delicious dinner!

We know many parents in our school community have a small business. As a way to help support those businesses, we are piloting a Small Business Saturday campaign. On the first Saturday of the month, starting January 7, we welcome parents in our community to post an announcement about their (family-friendly) small businesses. Just open Konstella, click “school” on the bottom left, then the plus sign on the top right and select “Announcement”. After three months we will send out a community survey to assess how it’s going and make any necessary changes.

As we look to the spring semester, this is one of the ways we're trying to help build community among families at Hyde. We encourage everyone to join the monthly PTA general body meetings as a great way to get more involved in strengthening our school community. If you have other ideas please don't hesitate to reach out to the PTA Board via Konstella or pta.hydeaddison@gmail.com. As a reminder, there are no dues or requirements to "join" the PTA; all are welcome!

School mental health services and supports are an effective means of addressing the mental health needs of children and improving the learning environment. Click here if you would like to refer a student for mental health or counseling support provided by Ms. Stovall. Referrals will be processed by the Mental Health Team and staff will receive communication and updates regarding services.
