State Assessment Season is Here!
Part of the return to the new normal is the return of state assessment season! This school year, the state assessment season is being kicked-off with WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment) on January 30, 2023. The WIDA is the annual assessment that is taken by our multilingual learners who currently receive English language support. The WIDA provides a wealth of information on how well we are academically preparing students for success.
The main event of assessment season is the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in English language arts (ELA) and math and the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS). The SBA is taken by nearly all students in grades 3 through 8 in addition to 10th graders and some 11th and 12th graders who are striving to use the results to meet a required Graduation Pathway. The WCAS is only administered in grades 5, 8, and 11. The SBA begins in April and ends in June, although your student will likely be testing for only about 3 to 5 days during that window. Your school will be providing more detailed information, such as specific dates of testing for your student, prior to spring break.
The WA-AIM (Washington Access to Instruction and Measurement) is the required state assessment for our students who are highly impacted by cognitive disabilities. This assessment is intended to provide equitable access to tools for instruction and assessment to ensure that we are providing every student with all of the support that they need.
Last but not least for spring assessment season are the OSPI Classroom Based Assessments (CBAs). The CBAs are utilized in content areas that don’t currently have a more comprehensive and summative type assessment. Thus, these assessments are taken in Social Studies, the Arts, and Health & Fitness. These assessments do not generate scores at the state level as they are intended to help ensure that all content area teachers have a common collection of tools that help ensure all of their students are experiencing academic growth and success.
In addition to state assessments, Anacortes High School has many other non-state assessments that are administered in spring, such as Advanced Placement (AP) testing, SAT and ACT testing. Please contact your student’s high school counselor if you have questions.
State Assessment Score Reports
Families will receive assessment reports via email & Skyward. The following is what you can expect in the future and steps to take to retrieve your students final version of the score report:
Preliminary score reports are generated by the school district and e-mailed to families approximately two weeks after the end of the testing window. In most years, the state assessment spring window closes the 1st or 2nd Friday of June which means you would expect to find the preliminary results in your email before the end of June.
Final score reports are provided to us by OSPI, in electronic (PDF) format only. The final score reports will be posted to the students Portfolio in Skyward within one week of receipt from OSPI. OSPI typically makes the electronic version of the reports available in late August or September, although time varies and the district does not have any control over the OSPI timelines.
Paper versions of score reports will be provided by request only. If you require a paper version of a score report, please contact your student’s school office.

AHS Wall of Fame Input Sought

The district will be hosting an AHS Wall of Fame advisory council. The Wall of Fame at Anacortes High School is a display of current and historic photos, plaques and memorabilia, both in physical and digital format. The focus of the council is to solicit ideas, gather input and receive feedback as to the future plans for the Wall of Fame. The advisory council will inform District decision-makers of the outcomes of the meetings.
Submit your interest in serving on the advisory council by Wednesday, January 25 either by completing this electronic survey or completing a paper copy at one of our home games. You will be notified by Friday, January 27 if you have been selected to serve on the committee.

New COVID-19 and Flu A + B test available!
The Learn to Return program funded by the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) provides free COVID-19 testing for Washington K-12 schools. This letter is to inform you that through this program, our school will now start offering BD Veritor SARS-CoV-2 & Flu A+B testing at our district starting January 3rd, 2023.
Commonly referred to as BD Triplex, this test detects Flu A + B as well as COVID-19 and can be a useful tool to detect respiratory illnesses during the winter months. Knowing if it is COVID-19 or the flu allows families and caregivers to make informed decisions about staying home and seeking follow-up care as needed. Our goal is to provide a healthy and safe environment for all students.
Please see the frequently asked questions about BD Triplex below to help you learn more about this technology:
What is BD Veritor SARS-CoV-2 & Flu A+B test?
Also known as BD Triplex, this test is a rapid antigen test that uses one sample to detect three viruses: COVID-19, flu A, and flu B. It only takes 15 minutes to get clear results for each sample. Watch this short video for more details on how this test works. You can also look at the BD Veritor for COVID and Flu Patient Factsheet for more information.
What does this mean for me as a parent/student?
Getting tested with BD Triplex is a similar experience as getting tested with other COVID-19 tests since the sample collection method is the same. BD Triplex’s only difference is that it detects flu as well as COVID-19 using a single sample.
What should I do if I want my student to be tested with BD Triplex?
1- Contact the Covid Coordinator, Dianne Szerlong, to schedule a test.
dszerlong@asd103.org or 360-503-1217
2- Parents/caregivers who want their student to participate in BD Triplex testing must sign a new consent form: Consent to test .
What if my student tests positive for Flu A + B or COVID-19?
Most people with flu have mild illness and do not need medical care or antiviral drugs. If you get sick with flu symptoms, in most cases, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people except to get medical care. If, however, you have symptoms of flu and are in a higher-risk group, or are very sick or worried about your illness, contact your healthcare provider.
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/treatment/takingcare.htm
What to Do if your Child Gets the Flu
How long do I need to stay home if I am positive for the flu?
Stay home when you are sick until at least 24 hours after your fever is gone (100 degrees or higher) without the use of fever-reducing medications, symptoms have significantly improved and you feel well enough to participate in normal activities.
Covid Dashboard
The online dashboard will take the place of the emails that families received last year when we had a positive case within our buildings. We encourage anyone with concerns, especially high risk individuals, to check the website on a regular basis.
