1ST-4TH GRADE SWEETHEARTS CARNIVAL

You had to be present to appreciate the full magnitude of the excitement the first through fourth graders brought to the event last Friday evening (6:00 to 7:30 pm, 2-16-2024). Each well-dressed student came with an adult chaperone to share the experience with. They started with pictures at the photo booth in the cafeteria atrium. Nearby tables in the atrium were staffed with teachers who painted students faces or helped them decorate masks to wear as they moved around. Students were given tickets to participate in a variety of games like ring tossing and corn hole located along the cafeteria west wall. Popcorn, hot dogs and pizza were available along the north wall. Two thirds of the cafeteria space was left open for dancing, which took place over the entire evening. Our school mascot, Raider, joined in and during the 1 1/2 hour event, students were given chances to ask Raider yes or no questions to help determine who was wearing the costume. It was a non-stop night. The students clearly had a great time playing games or coloring with their chaperones, dancing wildly or chasing each other about. Everyone left the carnival exhausted and in good spirits.

17 Dance Pictures.

18 Party Games Pictures (example corn hole)

We were fortunate to have Ms. Vaillancourt and Ms. Trainer organize this complex evening event. They planned the entire carnival over the last month and really hustled in the several days before it took place. They recruited more than two dozen staff members to help run the event on a Friday evening after everyone's long week of regular work. Ms. Vaillancourt and Trainer are logistics and enrichment staff members who orchestrate City School's extensive Open Doors program and afternoon and evening sports offerings.

Yes it is cold out but the fact that there is almost no wind will make a positive difference. If you have hats, mittens, a decent coat and footwear it will be possible to go outside and have a good time. There are two more days before the snow is gone. Snow tube if you can.

Remember...

  • do not tie the tubes together
  • do not stand up in the tube when going downhill
  • do not aim to hit anyone
  • walk up the hill behind the hay bale fences

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Black History Month is a celebration of Black American history and achievement that takes place each February in the United States. It is also called African American History Month. During Black History Month, many people learn about the accomplishments of individual Black Americans as well as the contributions of Black people to American history. This February, we are excited to celebrate Black voices with books that center around Black lives, Black joy, and Black stories that are sure to resonate far beyond a single month of the year. Join us as we #ShareBlackStories and checkout books from our City School library collection.

LIFE DOESN'T FRIGHTEN ME

Angelou’s strong words are matched by the bold vision of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose style reveals the powerful emotions and fanciful imaginings of childhood. Together, Angelou’s words and Basquiat’s paintings create a place where every child, indeed every person, may experience their own fearlessness.

This brilliant introduction to poetry and contemporary art features brief biographies of Angelou and Basquiat and an afterword from the editor. A selected bibliography of Angelou’s books and a selected museum listing of Basquiat’s works open the door to further inspiration through the fine arts.

MAE JEMISON

Meet Mae Jemison, scientist, astronaut and the first ever black woman in space.

When Mae Jemison was a little girl, she dreamed of blasting off into space on a rocket ship. She was so excited as she watched the Apollo Moon landings, but she wondered… why none of the astronauts were women?

Mae loved science and was so bright that she started college at just 16, and was training to be a doctor by the age of 20. She joined the Peace Corps, using her medical knowledge to help people in countries all around the world. Upon returning to the United States, she was accepted into NASA’s astronaut program.

After hard work and training, in 1992 Mae became the first Black woman to travel into space! This inspiring book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the groundbreaking astronaut’s life.
