Never Ever Absent or Tardy
Building good attendance habits have a lasting positive impact on your child. Here’s what you can do to help your child succeed:
1. Set a regular bed time and morning routine.
2. Allow up to 10 minutes of extra time in the morning to avoid being late to school.
3. Lay out clothes and pack lunches the night before.
4. Schedule doctor appointments for after school hours if possible.
5. Avoid extended trips or vacations when school is in session.
Pre - K
March is here which means spring is just around the corner. The students have enjoyed acting out nursery rhymes and learning about presidents, community helpers, and Texas. We are looking forward to learning about objects in the sky and different ways that we can care for our environment. Testing has begun for the third grading period. Take some time to review with your child any skills that they may have not mastered on the last report card. They should be able to intentionally draw a picture, symbols, or words to convey meaning. Having your child keep a home journal would be very beneficial at this time.
I hope all of my Pre-K Pups and their families have a wonderful and restful Spring Break.
First Grade
Second Grade
Third Grade
Third grade will be busy for the month of March. We will continue to work on Expository Writing by writing letters and responding to readings that we do in class. After Spring Break, we will be working on poetry in both reading and writing. Students will be exposed to a variety of poems and will have the opportunity to create some of their own. Also, we will begin to prepare for the STAAR test in May by doing a variety of review activities. In social studies, we will be spending a week on women’s history and also Texas culture. We will talk about things such as different festivals that are held in Texas (Texas State Fair, Rodeo, and Texas Independence Day just to name a few), our community, and legends that showcase Texas culture. We will also start to talk about economics, business leaders, wants vs. needs, and the importance of spending vs. saving. In math, 3rd grade will be working on measurement. We will continue to practice all of the multiplication facts we have learned this year. In science students will complete learning about the grassland, freshwater and salt water ecosystems. It will be a busy month for sure!
Fourth Grade
Fourth grade will be launching our “Countdown to STAAR” this month!!! Homework will look a little different as we transition to a more STAAR like format. Please take the time to review your child’s work and reinforce the skills being taught at school.
The Math Department is currently working on fractions, and we will move into measurement toward the end of the month. Also, many of our Top Dogs are still struggling with fact fluency. This skill is the essence of fourth grade math, and additional practice at home would help build their fluency to ensure success.
The Language Arts Department is continuing to work on expository writing and traditional literature. Students will be taking their reading benchmark on March 26 – 27.
Students are currently studying about the Texas Revolution in social studies coupled with Earth Science in their science class. As we wrap up Earth Science, we will move on to Life Science.
Art
We’d like to congratulate the following students on being chosen for the Youth Art Month exhibit at the at the South County Public Library, 2101 Lake Robbins Drive in The Woodlands from March 6th through March 27th. You can stop by any time during regular business hours to see their work. We are so proud!

You will soon see order forms coming home for Square 1 Art! Each year, every students does a piece of artwork that we send to Square 1 Art and then they offer the artwork on keepsake items such as mugs, aprons, phone cases, totes, pillow cases, hot pads, and ornaments (just to name a few!). This helps fund our art program and allows us to do all the amazing artwork in a variety of mediums each year. All items will be back in time for Mother’s Day! Be looking for more information to go home very soon.
PE
We would like to congratulate our First Graders on their wonderful accomplishment of raising nearly $5,000 for the American Heart Association. They completed their program on February 21st in a great family fun health night here at BWE. We are so proud of them for helping boys and girls with sick hearts! What a great way to show kindness and compassion!
Our 3rd and 4th graders just completed their FitnessGram testing. This is a test to measure their strength, endurance, and flexibility. Our bulldogs did an awesome job showing great success in all of these areas! We will be getting into our Basketball Unit this month and discussing March Madness!
Kinder, 1st, and 2nd graders have been working with their rhythm sticks. In this unit, they learn self- control, rhythm, and coordination. They are really enjoying the songs that we do the sticks as well as some of the fun challenges!
We have been incorporating some technology into our PE classes! Since February was heart month, all of our Bulldogs got to experience the new program we purchased called “Curioscope.” This program comes with a t-shirt that is scanned with the ipad. It shows what is going on inside our bodies. This past month we were able to show the students what an actual heart looks like and how it pumps blood throughout our bodies. The kids love that we put the t shirt on our Mr. Bones and they get to scan his body! Along with Curioscope, we have our new running app “EZ Scan.” This app allows the students to scan their code each time they run a lap. It automatically keeps track of their distance! Now, if only the rain would go away so we can get more use out of it!
Upcoming Event- Field Day will be on Thursday, April 18th!!
Music
Music classes are buzzing along with all kinds of sweet sounds. Kindergartners are learning their songs for their program that will be presented Thursday, April 4th at 6:00 PM. Look for additional information to be sent home from your Kindergarten teacher. The first grade students are learning a variety of music concepts. They are learning about instrument families, folk dance movements and how to sing correctly to music. The second graders are getting ready to present their program, "Pajama Party." The program will be presented Thursday, March 21st at 6:00 PM. Letters went home to parents mid February. Students are to wear pajamas and tennis shoes. They are also asked to bring their favorite stuffed animal. Please make sure the animal is a smaller stuffed animal.
Recorders: Third and fourth grade students are continuing their recorder unit. Everyone is doing a great job and sounding very musical. Please help your child to remember to bring their recorder to music every week. Also, make sure your child puts their recorder in their backpack after they practice at home. The unit will continue until April.

Due to a major schedule change, the Book Fair will be open ONLY from 7:35 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. each school day. Parents will be invited to shop each morning from 7:35-8:30 a.m. as you drop off for the day. Students will be invited to shop as the teacher allows between8:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. NOTE: We will close EVERY DAY just after our Kindergarten Lunch/Recess time. If you would like to shop with your child, make plans to “Pop” in to Shop” one day during your child’s lunch and/or recess time to pick up books for your Spring Break Reading. Read below for details on these Family Shopping Events. Unfortunately, due to some unforeseen issues, the library will be unable to offer after school and/or Saturday shopping for this book fair. Feel free to make plans to visit during our abbreviated shopping hours, visit our Online Book Fair, and/or set your child up with their own eWallet.
Special Programs available during this book fair include:
- NEW digital payment option: Book Fair eWallet! Now your student can shop the Fair cash-free! To create an eWallet for your Bulldog, visit the Book Fair Website at http:www.scholastic.com/bf/birnhamwoodselementary -- create an account -- add the funds your child is able to spend -- send your child shopping at the BWE Library Feb. 26-Mar. 6. Note: the funds added to the eWallet act like a "hold". You will only be charged for the purchases made using the eWallet.
- Classroom Wish Library - Our focus of this book fair once again will be to build our classroom libraries for all teachers. Our school goal is to help our teachers grow their classroom libraries so that students have access to 30+ books per child. To support this goal, the BWE Library will offer the Classroom Wish List display for teachers where parents can stop to pick up a book to purchase for the classroom. For ideas on books our teachers need for their classroom libraries, visit our Book Fair Website and check out our School Wish List.
- “Book How Much We Love You” Gift Certificates – unable to visit our fair, consider buying your teacher a “Book How Much We Love You” Gift Certificate to be used to purchase books for the classroom library.
- All For Books Donations – in honor of the book fair theme Scholastic DINO-MITE Book Fair: Stomp, Chomp, and Read, we thought we would have a little fun with our All For Books Donations. When you donate $1, BWE receives a dollar for books AND another school in the United States receives a matching dollar. Scholastic donates up to 1 million dollars in books through the All For Books Donations. For this fair, students will get to VOTE on their favorite dinosaur with each dollar donated. Watch for the set of Book Fair flyers to be sent home in February to decide which dinosaur deserves to with the “Best Dino” Award!
- “Pop” in to Shop Time – Make plans to “pop” in during lunch or recess to shop with your child Tuesday, February 26-Tuesday, March 5. Free popcorn and a free popcorn bookmark will be given with each purchase. Thank you to our BWE PTO for sponsoring our “Pop” in to Shop Time! Look for more information on this special shopping opportunity in our Book Fair flyers which will come home in February.
- Online Shopping - hoping to shop from home? You can visit our Book Fair Website to begin Online Shopping February 15-March 7th. Books purchased through the Online Book Fair will be delivered to our school after Spring Break.
As always, we appreciate your support of the Scholastic Book Fair. Proceeds from this book fair will help us to continue growing our classroom libraries and provide funding for our annual author visits. Note: BWE will host a school-wide children’s author next school year in addition to our annual writing workshops for 3rd and 4th grade. See you at the Book Fair!
