Greetings, Urbana Family and Friends,
In collaboration with Mayor Marlin and the City of Urbana, Urbana School District recognized UHS students who volunteer and are “doing good in the U”. On Wednesday evening, we celebrated these youth during the 2nd Mayoral Recognition Program. This year the program was expanded to include a Student Success Resource Fair that included many community partners, college and career professionals, UHS clubs, extracurricular activities, and athletics. Recognized students were required to volunteer at least 30 hours during the school year. Here is a little more information by the numbers:
95 awardees
5,184 volunteer service hours
5 homes on which students worked (3 in MS and 2 in IL)
32 pints of blood donated
51 new voters registered
300 turkeys handed out to USD116 families during the “Big Give” Turkey giveaway
480 meals served during UHS Parent Teacher Conference Dinners
This year the committee recognized double the number of awardees. We are already planning next year’s event and hope to have even more student participation!!
Despite our concern that the gym floor at UMS would not be completed in time for the 8th-grade promotion, we are very thankful that we will be able to hold the Promotion Ceremony in the gym as planned. Several more uplifting Promotion Ceremonies are happening District-wide to recognize our 5th graders transitioning on to UMS. This 5th-grade promotion flyer has more information if you are looking for a specific celebration to attend.
As we close out Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week, if you have not had an opportunity to thank a teacher or staff member, please take a few moments to do so before the summer break. Our staff deserves to be honored and appreciated every day of the year, not just in May. I hope you had an opportunity to show or tell how much you appreciate their efforts tangibly or in other thoughtful ways.
As we head into the weekend, I want to wish everyone a safe and relaxing Mother’s Day. I hope you are all able to spend some time with your loved ones.
All my best,
Dr. Ivory-Tatum

Teacher Appreciation Week
As part of Teacher Appreciation Week 2023, Dan Ditchfield with Horace Mann funded ALL of the DonorsChoose Projects from USD teachers, totaling more than $10,000! The donation will bring iPads, art supplies, books in multiple languages, dramatic play materials, math tools, summer learning supplies and more into classrooms.
We are grateful to have amazing community partners who believe in public education and Urbana Schools!
Wind Symphony
The UHS Wind Symphony performed at the SuperState Concert Band Festival last week. The band had to submit a recording in February as part of the application process. It has been at least 10 years since the band has made it through this extremely competitive application process. In the concert band world, this is the equivalent of an athletic team making it to state.

The following athletes took 1st place in their event:
