St Benedict's Catholic College
15 December 2017
PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
On Wednesday, we held our final Mass and Awards ceremony for 2017. These events highlight the two main purposes of any good Catholic school. The idea that we have, as a primary focus, the desire to walk in the light of Christ, and the core business of a school to fully develop the potential of the students within it. Each of these goals were reflected in the celebrations that occurred.
As a community, we celebrated the Eucharist with Fr. David who gave of his time even though he is himself recovering from illness. We then recognised the achievements of our students in a range of areas including academics, as well as sporting and overall effort. Both of these highlight what is important to our community and celebrating them is an essential part of who we are and what we do. Thank you to all the staff and students who were pivotal in this journey through 2017 and involved in the organisation of the events.
The other major event was the Australian Catholic Youth Festival. I have reflected on this in past newsletters but it was apparent to me last week as I supervised the students returning from Sydney that they gained greatly from the pilgrimage and the opportunity for growth both spiritually and personally. I congratulate them for their decision to embark on this path and encourage them to continue it into the future. I again thank the staff (especially Mr Hayden) for their great contribution to the Youth Program.
As I stated last week, I will be moving on next year for my next challenge. I have had a unique experience as the Foundation Assistant Principal and Acting Principal of St Benedict’s. This experience I hope, has made me a better person and a better educator. St Benedict’s is truly fortunate to have such a dedicated and committed staff who contribute their all to everything they do. I would like to especially thank Mr Hanratty for his continued guidance and vision. He is a man of great integrity and a leader in the true sense. The College leadership team (Mr Costin, Mr Shelton, Mr Bombardiere, Mrs Newell, Mr Jolly and Mrs James) work tirelessly to provide, structures, practices and processes that will provide for an efficient College. What makes this even more phenomenal is that they do it all with the focus constantly on improving opportunities for your children.
To our Year Coordinators and Faculty Coordinators, a huge thank you. There is an enormous amount of work, consultation and collegial discussion that occurs with every decision made. These people are often at work hours before the students start and hours after they finish. Their efforts are a reflection of how much they care. This care is also reflected in the long hours and concern that is given by each of the teaching and support staff within the College. They aim to provide the best opportunities they can, and this is only possible with dedication and commitment.
Our students are very well supported by our front office staff and our College Counsellor, Ms Gloria Melham. Each of these people have often offered words of encouragement and suggestions for improvement to both students and staff. Their wisdom and good humour will carry the College in good stead well into the future. Thank you also to our priests who have worked to build a strong community of faith and values. A special thank you to Fr Michael Williams who guided and supported us in the initial years, and Fr David Catteral who has continued this work following the establishment of the parish of St Mary McKillop. Their advice and support is invaluable.
Finally, a huge thank you to the parents and students of St Benedict’s. Over the last seven years, St Benedict’s has grown from an idea, into a fully functioning and caring educational community. It is with the support of the parents and willingness of the students to strive for something better that has built our College into something very special.
Whilst I leave at the end of this year, I am sure St Benedict’s will always be a part of me and I thank you all for being a part of that journey.
Wishing you the best for a peaceful, Happy and Holy Christmas and further into your journey ahead,
Mr. Steve Lo Cascio
FROM THE DIRECTOR OF MISSION AND VISION
The reading from last weekends Mass was from Mark 1:1-18, the story of John the Baptist Preparing the Way. John the Baptist plays an important role in preparing the way for Jesus and Pope Francis recognises this. This is an excerpt from the Vatican radio focusing on a Homily the Pontiff gave in relation to John the Baptist.
John the Baptist as a model for Christians today: that was the focus of Pope Francis’ homily at Mass in the Santa Marta chapel on Tuesday morning, the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist. Describing him as ‘the greatest of the prophets’, the Pope summed up the three key vocations of John in three words: ‘prepare’, ‘discern’ and ‘diminish’.
Firstly Pope Francis said John was a man who prepared the way for Jesus without taking any of the glory for himself. People sought him out and followed him because he was a powerful preacher, the Pope noted, but when asked if he was the Messiah, John replied that he was just “a voice” who had come “to prepare the way of the Lord.”
The second vocation of John the Baptist, Pope Francis said, was to discern, among so many good people, who was the true Messiah. When John saw Jesus passing by, he said to the disciples, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world”. The disciples looked, but let Jesus go on, so John repeated to them the next day, “Look, this is God’s chosen one!” The third vocation of John the Baptist, Pope Francis said, is to diminish himself so that the Lord may grow in the hearts of others.
This third stage of John’s vocation is the most difficult one, the Pope noted, because Jesus had a way of behaving which was so very different from what John had imagined. Just before his death in prison, John is filled with doubt and sends his disciples to ask Jesus if he really is the chosen one. John is humiliated through his death but also in the darkness of his doubts, yet he remains a model for Christians today. Pope Francis concluded by saying that as Christians we too must prepare the way of the Lord, we must discern the truth and we must diminish ourselves so that the Lord can grow in our hearts and in the souls of others.
The last few weeks of school have certainly been active, with many things happening in regards to the religious life of the College.
Australian Catholic Youth Festival
I had the absolute pleasure last week to attend the Australian Catholic Youth Festival with 32 of our students and 4 of our staff members. It was amazing to see so many of our young people engaged in their faith in such a solemn and enjoyable way. There were many highlights for me personally, but it was remarkable to be a part of 19,000 people in the plenary sessions singing some great Catholic music.
Sr Hilda, as always was remarkable. Sr Hilda led us in a beautiful quiet prayer, inviting God to personally be with each of us. To keep so many young people quiet and meditative in such an environment speaks so much about the awe and respect in which Sr Hilda is held. Congratulations must go to the students who entered the festival in such an open and positive manner and conducted themselves in a fantastic way.
I am very grateful to Mr Hayden, who as the College Youth Ministry Coordinator, did a wonderful job organising our students and their schedules on the day. To Miss Liska and Ms Grego who, as group leaders, were enthusiastic and dedicated and did a superb job in guiding the students around. Thanks also, to Miss Abouchabake, who gave up her Saturday to join us at the festival and for the pilgrimage and final Mass.
St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal
Recently, our prayer focus has looked at supporting the St Vincent De Paul Christmas Appeal. We have asked students and families to donate to this wonderful cause through, not only a food drive, but also by placing a gift for a young person under the Christmas tree here at school. The response from our community has been amazing. We have been able to provide 25 local families with enough food for a nice meal at Christmas lunch, and possible for the following few days. We have also been able to provide many of the young people in the families with a present to open on Christmas morning which will help bring such joy and happiness to their lives.
I have been incredibly impressed with this years efforts and it is a clear reminder to us all of putting our faith into action, just as St Theresa of Avila reminds us that Christ has no body now on earth but yours (ours). Congratulations to all students involved and particular thanks and congratulations to Mrs Castelli, who has done a wonderful job looking over the Social Action group for the majority of the year.
As this is the final newsletter of the year I would like to take this opportunity to wish all families a happy and holy Christmas, and I am looking forward to a very exciting 2018.

After 13 years of schooling, it all came to a close for the 2017 Year 12 cohort on Friday 24 November at their school formal. City Beach Function Centre provided a beautiful backdrop for this special occasion; the beach views from the balcony were only surpassed by how dapper and elegant Year 12 students looked on the night.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who spoke on the night, including the School Captains, Madison-Leigh Colmenar and Jackson Lewis, the Leaders of Mission, Chaltu Etana and Maddison Evans and the formal committee representatives, Mariah Kent and Heather Mannion. I would also like to thank Mr Rodriguez for speaking on behalf of the parents, and to Mr Davidson and the Music group for the rhythmical contributions to the night.
Our Inspire award winner, Patrick Stafford, and the Benedictine Medallion winner, Maddison Evans, were recognised once more for their achievements in the cutting of the school cake, which was exquisitely created and presented by maggieandmaycakedesigns, which can be found on Facebook or Instagram. Capture Photography also beautifully captured all photographs of the event. Lastly I would like to thank all teachers for their help with setting and packing up the formal, especially Mrs Castelli.
Best wishes to our entire Year 12 cohort in their future endeavours. You played a huge role in shaping the St Benedict’s community and we wish you only happiness and success as you begin a new chapter of your lives beyond our College.
Miss Chloe Chalmers
Social Action Team
The Social Justice team have been very busy for the last few weeks preparing for the Vinnies Christmas Appeal. Together we were able to create 10 hampers of food for families in our local community who are finding it tough. Not only were we able to provide some lovely food, Bennies students took part in our first ever Christmas Wishing Tree. This means the children from these families will wake up on Christmas morning with a present, something everyone should be proud of.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the Bennies community for your thoughtfulness. As I keep saying to our students, a little goes a long way and this was certainly proved on Friday when our team had the pleasure of delivering the hampers and presents to Alex and Jenny from Camden Vinnies.
I would like to say a particular thanks to the following students who were in the storeroom with me every morning, collecting, packing and delivering:

National Athletics
The College would like to congratulate Nakiesha Brimble on her great achievements at the National Athletics in Adelaide.
Nakeisha competed in two events; triple jump and long jump. She did an amazing job and ended her week in Adelaide walking away with two silver medals. Nakeisha also broke her PB in both events, and was very pleased with her results.
We as a College look forward in seeing where Nakeisha’s athletic abilities will lead her to in the future.
