ROADRUNNER UPDATES
October 2020
Dear Larsen School families,
It is hard to believe that we have finished our first 6 weeks of school! I know that our students have been working hard in their synchronous work during live lessons and independently during asynchronous learning time. It is wonderful to see our kiddos try their best during this “new normal."
This new normal brings plenty of challenges for all of us, including our students. If you haven’t already done so, please be sure to reach out to your child’s teachers if you notice any struggles at home whether it be social-emotionally, with assignments, or understanding concepts.
A big shout out to our school custodians. October 2nd is National Custodial Appreciation Day. We celebrate the dedication and stewardship of our Larsen custodial team. We rely on these team members for countless tasks every day and every night. The time and dedication our team has given in support of maintaining clean and healthy learning environments during the COVID-19 pandemic is greatly appreciated. They are working on a variety of projects to improve our school and it shows!
Another big thank you goes out to our dedicated teachers that give 100% to our students each day! Their positive attitude and strong commitment to those they teach is more evident than ever. They are continually engaged in professional development and are working incredibly long hours all for the love of teaching and the passion to help our students achieve their potential during distance learning.
I am also so thankful for our families and entire staff who have trusted and supported each other along the way. Without all of us working together, progress can’t happen. But, together, we can – and will – achieve our commitment to creating the best school for each and every one of our students for the rest of the school year and beyond.
Thank you for all the support you give to your children and have an excellent weekend.
Go Roadrunners!

Attendance and Engagement
In regards to attendance, I want to make sure it’s clear to all our Larsen families that students need to attend their live Zoom or Google Meet synchronous lessons with their teacher during their designated A or B group times. All students need to log into their Seesaw or Google Classrooms daily to complete their assignments. Teachers record attendance and engagement based on who attends their live video lessons and who is logged into their Seesaw or Google Classroom. If your student is absent, unable to connect, or unable to complete assignments for a technical reason, please call our office at (805)986-8740 so that we may have accurate records.
Social Emotional Well-being
How many of you have noticed changes in your child’s behavior or mood in the past few weeks? Self-regulation is another important element of social-emotional development that includes managing emotions and behavior when faced with difficult situations and transitions. Increased anger, irritability, withdrawal, clinginess, or even sleep and appetite changes may indicate that a child has strong underlying emotions they don’t know how to appropriately express.
So, what are some practical steps we can take to support our children’s social-emotional health through this time?
- As much as possible, establish a predictable routine and rhythm for your days.
- Prioritize spending quality time each day with your children to increase their sense of security.
- Provide regular opportunity for your children to connect with family members and friends by video, phone, or handwritten letters.
- Spend time outside, and get regular exercise.
- Encourage children to develop goals to work towards during their time at home.
- Give your child something fun to look forward to. Schedule a game night, develop a menu for a special meal to cook together, or plan a pretend trip to an exotic location!
- Encourage children to keep a journal or blog to record their thoughts and feelings.
