This Week at GLOBE
News & Notes | February 16, 2022
From the Executive Director
Dear GLOBE community,
As we gear up for the long weekend ahead, I want to call your attention once more to the Covid vaccination clinic, taking place this Saturday from 10–3 at Upper Campus. Beyond the health protection these vaccines offer, you'll also walk away with $100 per person, if you're among the first 100 people vaccinated.
After the break, we've got a line-up of special days you'll want to read more about below. These include the upcoming Science Week (we hope you'll get in on the fun at home!) and Read Across America Day, where your kids can dress as characters from their favorite books.
I also wanted to share a few joyful photos from this week at GLOBE. We're eager to have parent volunteers back in the building as soon as we're able, but in the meantime, we hope you enjoy these glimpses of the student experience. Thank you for sharing your kids with us; we are grateful for the opportunity to teach them.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge our Lower Campus counselor, Ashley Witeczek, who recently announced that she will not be returning to GLOBE. Ms. Witeczek served GLOBE for seven years and has loved our students while being an advocate for all children. Her dedication to our school will be missed, and we will be forever grateful for the great work she did at GLOBE. Mr. Lawrence, the 4th and 5th grade counselor, will be at Lower Campus in the mornings until a new LC counselor is hired.
As always, if you have any questions, please let us know.
Sincerely,
Christi Elliott-Earby
Executive Director

Read Across America Day
Elementary school students (K–5) will be celebrating Read Across America Day on March 1 and 2. All students will celebrate on their English day! Students will have the opportunity to choose a book that represents their culture or family history. They can dress up as a person from that book and if possible donate a copy of the book to their classroom library. We hope to add additional books to the classroom libraries so they can be even more robust and reflective of our diverse community. Reading diverse and inclusive books in the coming weeks might help your student discover a character with whom they identify. You might even find one here on Read Across America's calendar for the year. Looking for even more diverse books? Click here.

Dress-down Thursdays
Lower Campus
Author Katrina Carter will virtually visit all Lower Campus classes this Thursday or Friday (on students’ English day) to read her book Zoey and the Monster Masher. We encourage you to support Ms. Carter by purchasing a copy of her book. The school has purchased one copy for each English classroom.
Do you have a current 3rd grade student at GLOBE?
Upper Campus Assistant Head of School Judy Limor will be hosting a meeting for current 3rd grade parents to talk about 4th grade at GLOBE and the transition to Upper Campus on Thursday, February 24, at 5:30pm. Please check the weekly newsletter on Wednesday, February 23 for the Zoom link.
Afternoon carpool
Please do not park on Briarwillow Drive. Parking there, particularly in the afternoon, makes pedestrian crossing on Heritage Drive especially difficult.
Upper Campus
Upper Campus is excited to virtually welcome John Doyle from the Arts Education Integration Agency to help us celebrate Black History Month on Thursday, February 24. John will be presenting four 45-minute performances to our students - Martin Luther King for Grades 4 and 5, Growing Up for Grade 6, and two separate showings of Founding of SNCC - Radical Youth Leaders for Grades 7 and 8. A huge thank you to the PTCC for helping fund this unique opportunity!
Do you have a current 5th grade student at GLOBE?
Upper Campus Assistant Head of School Judy Limor will be hosting a meeting for current 5th grade parents to talk about 6th grade at GLOBE and the transition to middle school on Thursday, February 24, at 7:00pm. Winners will receive an annual membership to Fernbank museum for the whole family!

2022 GLOBE Annual Auction
We are now accepting donations for the The GLOBE Academy's PTCC Annual Spring Auction. This year's Auction will be a two-part event beginning with a silent auction (April 29), open and free for all through mobile bidding, and culminating with an in-person indoor/outdoor event (April 30) at Wild Heaven Brewery in Avondale Estates.
The Auction benefits all PTCC activities throughout the year including teacher appreciation, classroom resources, cultural events, International Fest, campus updates, Science Night and more. In order to make this possible, we need donations! Know of someone with a wonderful vacation home? Have a favorite boutique or fitness studio in the area? No donation is too big or small.
We also need volunteers to make the Auction a success. Email auction@theglobeacademy.net to volunteer to serve on the Auction Committee.

Board of Directors
At last month’s meeting, GLOBE’s Board of Directors elected a new chair: Drew Reynolds, PhD, MSW, MEd is a social worker who is passionate about advancing the lives of children and families on the margins, through work in health, human services, and education-focused nonprofits.
Professionally, Drew is Principal Consultant at Common Good Data Consulting, where he helps organizations design and evaluate social programs that work. Drew also brings his expertise in social work and nonprofit practice to the classroom, serving as a part-time instructor at the Georgia State School of Social Work. He is a conversationally fluent Spanish speaker and former high school Spanish teacher, and he is thrilled for the opportunity to support GLOBE's work in educating globally minded citizens who have the knowledge, skills and attitudes to effect positive change in the world.
Stay tuned to this space for more news from Drew and the board, including updates on the day-to-day work that advances our strategic plan, as well as our vision for the long-term success of our school.

Weekly COVID-19 testing
Viral Solutions will be back on campus again on Thursday, February 17 to provide all GLOBE students and staff with access to free rapid antigen testing. If you have questions about the testing process or how to receive your student's results, please read the FAQ flyer.
