Principal's Message

Sunny Heights Families,

The third quarter has come to an end and we only have 5 school days left before Spring Break. We have a lot to be proud of at this point in the year, but we are not done doing great work. Next week is a big week for our 3rd grade as we administer the 2019 IREAD3 test.

The IREAD test is an important measure for our 3rd graders. Parents can help support our students by making sure they are at school all day everyday, encouraging students to do their very best on each test, and get to bed early Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday night.

We are excited to see our students show what they know on IREAD and the upcoming ILEARN assessments!

Change our clocks - Spring Forward on March 10th at 2:00 a.m.

"Spring Forward - Fall Back"

This term is meant to trigger your memory to set your clocks forward 1 hour in the spring at the start of DST, and 1 hour back in the fall when DST ends.

A different way to remember which direction to set your clock for DST is that in the spring you bring out (or forward) the garden furniture and in the fall you put it back.

In North America, it is common to use the word fall to denote the season, while other English-speaking countries usually call it autumn. "Spring Forward - Fall Back" is therefore a phrase most often heard in the USA and Canada.

Healthy Smiles

Healthy Smiles is coming to Sunny Heights Elementary on April 4th & 5th. Healthy Smiles is a school-based dental program providing check-ups, cleaning, x-rays, and dental education among other things to students. All students are eligible for this service. information and registration forms were sent home with your child earlier this week. Please return these forms to the school clinic as soon as possible or by April 4th. If you have any questions regarding Healthy Smiles, please call 317-894-8370 or email at info@indysmiles.org.

IREAD-3 Testing

3rd graders will take the IREAD-3 Assessment during the week of March 11th - 15th. This is a critical statewide standardized assessment. The Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD-3) assessment measures foundational reading standards to Grade 3 students each spring. Based on the Indiana Academic Standards, IREAD-3 is a summative assessment that was developed in accordance with House Enrolled Act 1367 (also known as Public Law 109 in 2010). ILEARN ASSESSMENT

3rd and 4th graders will take the new statewide assessment called ILEARN. This is the assessment that has replaced ISTEP. The ILEARN testing window opens on Monday, April 22nd. ILEARN measures student achievement and growth according to Indiana Academic Standards. ILEARN is the summative accountability assessment for Indiana students and assesses the areas of Language Arts and Math. Fourth grade will have additional Science assessment that they will complete. MSD WARREN TOWNSHIP EXCEL PROGRAM FOR 2019-2020

Mission Statement: The EXCEL Program is designed to meet the unique academic and affective needs of highly talented students through a cooperative, enriched, and accelerated academic program where each person feels significant and appreciated.

The curriculum in the EXCEL program is differentiated and faster paced. Students will work above grade level.

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL - MONDAY, JUNE 3RD

Monday, June 3rd is Warren Township's last day of the regular school year (barring no further

weather closings). This date has been extended due to the following weather closings: November 15th and January 30th. All students will be dismissed early on this day.

Grades 5 - 12 will be dismissed at 1:30 pm

Grades K-4 will be dismissed at 2:30 pm

It is that time of year when we need reminders to make sure our children have appropriate clothing for recess. We will be going outside for recess if the temperature and the wind chill are above 20 degrees.

If a student has accrued a substantial balance, the student will be provided a choice of two alternate meals at a reduced rate of $0.50. Parents may check student account balances by using the link provided to the Lunch Parent Portal.

A NOTE FROM NURSE ROBERTA

Flu season is here. Your child's health is very important. Sometimes it's hard to tell if your child has the flu. Common symptoms include coughing, fever and chills. A fever can increase in just a few hours to very high levels. If your child is sick it is very important to keep them hydrated. Some examples include: water, Popsicles, juice, Pedialyte and Gatorade. Children, elderly and anyone who has chronic conditions (asthma, diabetes, heart disease) are more at risk from the flu. Flu can go into pneumonia which can be very dangerous. A child does not have to look sick to be sick. I am here as a resource for you. If you have questions or concerns, please give me a call at 317-532-2903.

CLASSROOM VISITS

In an effort to keep all children safe, anyone wanting to visit the classroom, have lunch with a child, and/or go on field trips must come to the school office to complete a background check. Please bring ID at that time. Visits are limited to 15 min. throughout the day. During those 15 min., parents are not able to talk with teachers. We do not want to interrupt class time. If you would like to meet with the teacher, schedule a meeting with the teacher prior to your visiting the school.

PTA

It is never to late to join our PTA. Joining the PTA allows you and your family to meet some great people. PTA functions are opportunities to meet other parents and teachers, to build a rapport and discuss issues that are on your mind. $7.00 is all it takes to become a member. Please ask your child's teacher for more information.
