Eccles Weekly News
November 3, 2022
Dear Eccles Families,
This past month our school has focused on the character traits: kindness and empathy. Our wonderful counselor, Ms. Siewell and Instructional Specialist, Mrs. Dooley, have taught lessons around kindness and empathy and against bullying. With buddy classes, students have made pins and made a pledge to…
Support others who have been hurt or harmed, treat others with kindness, be more accepting of people's differences and help include those who feel left out.
In one of your recent visits to Eccles, you may have noticed the paper rings hanging around our entrance way. Students made these to represent their connection to our community and their desire to make our Eccles a kinder place, free of bullying.
Tomorrow, Friday, November 4, we will come together as a school community to celebrate our second character trait assembly. This is a special time for the entire student body and staff to celebrate the good work our students are doing.
Sincerely,
Kelly

A Message from the District
Pedestrian Safety Tips
Before the bell rings to start the day and after the bell rings to signal its end, our schools are active with people, cars, and buses! We are thankful for our community police and fire partners and with their assistance, we’ve compiled this list of pedestrian safety reminders to help everyone stay safe during the arrival and dismissal process. Please take a look and share them with your students.
Make sure you never play, push, or shove others when you walk around traffic.
Use the sidewalk whenever possible, and if there isn’t a sidewalk, walk on the edge of the street facing traffic.
Use marked crosswalks when they’re available. Otherwise, cross carefully at an intersection.
Before crossing, always look left-right-left for vehicles or bikes, and don’t assume they can see you.
Everyone should watch the road, not their phones.
A Note from Mr. Rogers:
These are great reminders. I will add that we have many families who pick their students up on Cedar Street, near the fenceline. The number of parked cars along both sides of Cedar Street decreases visibility for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Further, we have many students and families crossing Cedar without using a crosswalk. If you are driving a vehicle and picking up your students, please use our car pick-up process and enter the parking lot off of Cedar Street. We typically get our last students into cars by 2:42, 10 minutes after students arrive at the gym for pick-up. Thank you for your cooperation in this very important matter.
Pie Fundraiser Success!
Our recent pie fundraiser with Willamette Valley Pie Company was a great success! Drumroll, please… We sold 1,093 pies and profited $6,671 for our school! Thank you to students, families, staff and friends for all of your support.
Pick-up Reminder
Monday, November 14 - 2:30-4:30 pm
Pies must be picked up on this day, as we have very limited refrigeration space. Feel free to recruit family or friends if you need assistance getting them in time.
Want to help?
We are in need of volunteers to help PTA unload pies and hand them out to families. If interested, sign up here. We always appreciate any support you can provide!
Volunteers
Field trips chaperone opportunities are coming up! Or, are you looking to volunteer in your student’s classroom? If you did not complete this process last year or are a new incoming family, an application must be submitted through the Canby School District.
Here’s what you need to know.
- This must be pre-arranged with the teacher and/or specialist that you are assisting.
- All new* volunteers must be registered and pass a background check in order to volunteer for any classroom, field trip, or activity on-site.
- All volunteers must sign in and out upon entry and exit of the school building.
We look forward to having you join us!
Meals at School
We are excited to welcome back our broadened meal selections this year, including the salad bar! Your children may qualify for free meals or for reduced-price meals, and now offer expanded income guidelines to qualify more families.
If you plan to have your child eat school-provided breakfast or lunch, please fill out a Meal Application online at https://www.ode.state.or.us/apps/frlapp - Our district ensures that our nutrition programs are easily accessible to all families.
> Click here to put money on your child's lunch account <
Meals will always be provided to students, no matter their application status or meal plan balance.
Health Reminders
As school begins and we are starting to enter the cold and flu season, please remember to review our district and school health 'stay home guidelines'. If you have any questions about whether a student should stay home, please don't hesitate to contact the office and we can put you in touch with our Health Assistant or District Nurse. We appreciate your help in keeping not only your student, but all other students, staff and families healthy this school year.
