Tech Tidbit: Pixel Press Floors
Have you ever heard of Pixel Press? I certainly hadn't until I attended my MASL Fall PD in Kansas City this past Saturday! As a fair warning, I will admit up front that this is not ap app that has applications for every classroom but I think that there are probably a lot of potential ways to use it so I'm sharing it anyway!
So, what is Pixel Press Floors? Floors is an app that allows you to create your own simple video game. (Think early Super Mario.) Below is a video because really, the company can tell you about their product better than I can! The school that I heard about this app from is using it in a library makerspace but there are plenty of ways that you can probably think to use it in your classroom.

Do You Know a Student Reader?
DHS is one of 4 schools in CPS (which is one of 11 sites in the NATION) that is participating in the ILA 2016 YA Choice Awards reading and voting. We have received a number of books that students will be reading and rating. The top 25 from student ratings will be chosen as the best YA books of 2015 in a list published by ILA in 2016. So, I'm looking for student readers! There will be announcements and activities in the near future, but if you know someone who is a reader, encourage them to stop by the library! (You can check out the titles on the DHS Media Center Pinterest board: https://www.pinterest.com/dhsmediacenter/ya-choice-award-2015/)

All the Truth That's In Me by Julie Berry
Four years ago, Judith and her best friend disappeared from their small town of Roswell Station. Two years ago, only Judith returned, permanently mutilated, reviled and ignored by those who were once her friends and family. Unable to speak, Judith lives like a ghost in her own home, silently pouring out her thoughts to the boy who’s owned her heart as long as she can remember—even if he doesn’t know it—her childhood friend, Lucas. But when Roswell Station is attacked, long-buried secrets come to light, and Judith is forced to choose: continue to live in silence, or recover her voice, even if it means changing her world, and the lives around her, forever.
All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill
Imprisoned in the heart of a secret military base, Em has nothing except the voice of the boy in the cell next door and the list of instructions she finds taped inside the drain. Only Em can complete the final instruction. She’s tried everything to prevent the creation of a time machine that will tear the world apart. She holds the proof: a list she has never seen before, written in her own hand. Each failed attempt in the past has led her to the same terrible present—imprisoned and tortured by a sadistic man called the doctor while war rages outside.
