January 14, 2022
Happy New Year! I hope that you each found time to relax and reconnect over the vacation. As I am sure you are aware, we have seen an increase in COVID-19 positive cases at McGovern School. We know that school is the most important place for students, especially at this age, to be and we will continue to diligently implement our mitigation strategies. Our main priority is to keep students safe while providing an enriching learning experience for all.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me.

COVID-19 Updates and Reminders
Some important information includes:
- Antigen tests are now accepted for testing purposes
New COVID-19 Quarantine Requirements
Differences in protocols for vaccinated individuals vs unvaccinated individuals
That email contains important information and I encourage all families to take time to read it and please reach it and reach out if you have questions. I recognize this is a challenging time for parents and students, and we want to ensure all families have the needed information about our school policies and mitigation strategies.
Please see the COVID Safety and information section below for other updated information.
School Banking Program
On Wednesday mornings, students can stop by the lobby and "deposit" their money with a bank employee. This will be a quick and efficient process. This program is a great opportunity to take the first steps in real-life financial literacy by teaching our students about a savings account at a young age. You can view this School Banking Video or this flyer about the program.
If you have any questions about the program or how to open an account please reach out to Ann Sherry from Charles River Bank at asherry@charlesriverbank.com
SAVE THE DATE: T.H.R.I.V.E. EVENT: CHASING CHILDHOOD
Medway T.H.R.I.V.E. has partnered with Medfield Public Schools to bring the film Chasing Childhood to our parent communities. Families will have the opportunity to watch the film from January 14-18. On January 19, Dr. Peter Gray, featured in the film, will give a presentation for parents from 12:00-1:00 p.m. To register to watch the film and attend the parent presentation please click here.
It is a difficult time to be a parent of young children. Finding that balance between scheduling experiences and providing less structured opportunities can sometimes feel impossible. In developing this event with THRIVE, I watched this film. I think as both a parent and educator that it is a worthwhile opportunity for any parent of young kids.
Literacy Update
Following an audit of our Grade 6-12 and K-5 Literacy programs during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years respectively, Medway Public Schools has partnered with Hill for Literacy to support our efforts to continuously improve our practices and ensure that our resources for teaching and learning are best aligned with these practices.
We are excited by the learning and work that Hill has brought to our K-5 teacher teams so far with professional learning focused on the science of reading, facilitating rich data teams, and the implementation of a new universal screener, DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills).
We will be entering into a new K-5 curriculum resource review following the break that will include the evaluation of commercial curriculum resources highly rated for quality, coherence, and usability.

Solar Canopy Survey
The Medway Public Schools, at the advice of the Energy and Sustainability Committee, are exploring the possibility of adding solar canopies to the schools' parking lots. Installing solar canopies would provide onsite renewable power generation and provide long-term financial benefits to the Medway Public Schools.
We are seeking the opinions of the community to better understand overall interest, questions, and concerns that may be connected to projects like this. To gather this information, we are asking that you complete the Solar Canopy Survey. The survey will be open until Tuesday, January 4. The results from this survey will help inform decision making on this topic. Thank you for your participation in this survey.

HOW TO FIND A PEDIATRIC COVID-19 VACCINE APPOINTMENT
Pediatric Vaccine now available for children 5 to 11
If Medway's vaccine clinic does not work for your family next Thursday, please read below about how to schedule a vaccine appointment for your child.
How to find a Pediatric COVID-19 vaccine appointment:
- Parents who prefer to have their child vaccinated by their primary care provider should call their provider’s office directly.
- Visit the VaxFinder tool at vaxfinder.mass.gov for a full list of hundreds of available locations. Residents will be able to narrow the results to search for locations that are offering the Pfizer Pediatric COVID-19 vaccine, with some appointments available now for booking. Additional appointments will be available online in the coming days. Many locations will be booking appointments out weeks in advance.
- For individuals who are unable to use VaxFinder, or have difficulty accessing the internet, the COVID-19 Vaccine Resource Line (Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 6 PM, Saturday and Sunday 9 AM – 2 PM) is available by calling 2-1-1. The COVID-19 Vaccine Resource Line is available in English and Spanish and has translators available in approximately 100 additional languages.
All state supported vaccination clinics will offer low-sensory vaccinations for children with disabilities.
Visit www.mass.gov/covidvaccinekids for more information. To view more information from the CDC, please click here.
Vaccines are widely available across the Commonwealth. Getting vaccinated remains the most important thing individuals can do to protect themselves, their families, and their community. The COVID-19 vaccine is safe, effective, and free. Individuals do not need an ID or health insurance to access a vaccine and do not need to show a vaccine card when getting a vaccine.
Massachusetts leads the nation in vaccine administration, including adolescent vaccination, with over 80% of youth ages 12-17 having received at least one dose. Over 4.7 million individuals are fully vaccinated, with more than 92% of all adults having at least one dose.
