Sections 41 & 42 Update
Reading: This week we began our preparations for MCAP. During these next few weeks, students will read various texts and practice different reading standards. We used a text this week called “Planet Earth” in which students learned about the composition of the Earth. This week students practiced skills of main idea, inferences, causes and effects, and interpreting text features.
Next week we will begin our preparation for MCAP. Students will synthesize information given across two texts about stress. When students synthesize they are combining the information that was gained from two different texts about the same topic. This is something students will complete each day for the Reading MCAP. Students will also have a spelling test on Thursday, March 30, 2023, instead of on Friday. There is no school Friday and all work will be posted for students to complete on BrainPop. Students' homework will be to practice their spelling words in preparation for the quiz on Thursday.
Social Studies: This week we brought a close to Chapter 4 Our Nation’s Economy. In this unit, students learned about globalization and how it affects our everyday lives. Students also explore how businesses meet our needs and want in our communities. Students used what they learned to create a business plan for their own business.
Next week will begin Chapter 5 in which students will learn about the Northeast Region. We will view visuals and have collaborative discussions in order to build background and establish meaning for the unit. Students will also explore the landforms and bodies of water that can be found in the Northeast Region. Friday’s assignment will be posted to BrainPop for students to complete. Students will not have Social Studies Homework this week.
Math: This week scholars have completed Topic 7: Factors and Multiples where we have discussed various strategies that can be used to find all of the factors and multiples of numbers as well as how to identify prime and composite numbers. Next week will begin with students demonstrating their understanding of Topic 7 by completing the unit assessment. All assessment grades will be entered and are final. Please use the Lesson Resources to help prepare. We will move on to our introductory fraction unit. Topic 8 consists of comparing fractions, generating equivalent fractions, and representing equivalent fractions. Please continue to have scholars study their 6-9 facts families and we will continue these fact drills next week.
Science: This week scholars conquered Topic 3: Waves and Information and have completed the unit assessment. All assessment grades will be entered and are final. Next week, we will continue to Topic 4: Earth’s Features where we will learn about the composition and structure of the Earth’s surface in addition to how natural forces have continuously altered the features of Earth.
Health: Next week we will continue Topic 6: Be Cool, Keep Clean. This unit discusses hormones and body changes, what good hygiene is, illness prevention, and good hygiene and looking good and feeling great. All health activities are assigned at the beginning of the week and are due on Friday. Because of this, retakes and late submissions are no longer accepted and all grades are final.
Sections 43 & 44 Update
Reading: This week in Reading Workshop, we started our MCAP boot camp. We will be preparing students for MCAP by reviewing a wide range of standards. This week we read two articles on adaptations. We worked closely with vocabulary, details, and comparing one text to the other.
Math: This week we worked our way through 4-7 Make Sense and Preserve (the last subtopic in topic 4) and the Topic 4 Test. Along with the problem-solving work in Canvas, students also worked in small groups to solve and present a series of problems to the class.
Topic 4 Review Test is scheduled for Wednesday, March 29. Please begin reviewing Topic 4 with your student, by using previous assignments and activities as well as the review sections in the Math book pg 158-162.
Science: This week students began lesson 3 “Waves and the Electromagnetic Spectrum”. Students completed an investigation designed to study how light moves and changes. Students designed their experiments based on their background knowledge about light and provided materials. Students were also asked to analyze their observations and present their findings to the class.
Please remember to check Canvas and SAVVAS with your student to review scores, and missing and or incomplete work.
Please have students complete and submit any assignments that are still open and available. Closed assignments will not be reopened.

An Update from Art
Hello!
This week our fourth graders worked hard to finish their positive and negative space African mask-inspired artworks! First, they learned about the art vocabulary words: positive space, negative space, and contrast with a world map. Then they recalled the meanings behind some African masks we learned about last year. Lastly, they came up with designs using African masks as their inspiration. I love the way they turned out!
