Anne Arundel County 4-H Happenings
December
Happy Holidays!
In “4-H and Youth Development” we are first educators, uniquely tasked with cultivating curiosity and inspiring growth. Our perspective is from a distance and while we call them ‘our youth’ (and feel that connection in many ways), they are, of course, your children. We are so grateful for the many opportunities we have to work with them, to develop their *spark* and allow them the freedom to pave their way in a very complicated world. As we emerge from our most challenging times, it has been wonderful to once again see our youths' smiles, their inquisitiveness, and their steadfast desire to absorb the world around them with fantastic optimism. As adults, they are our motivators and our inspiration to keep pushing forward.
In teaching, reflecting on what we’ve accomplished, where we’ve been, and what we would like to do or change helps us build a foundation for future learning. Looking back at 2022, we are so appreciative of the many people who support our organization, you are our core and without you we would not be able to offer these unique experiences. Thank you so much for your donation in any form or amount! We wish you all a wonderful holiday season!
Regards,
Gretchen & Joy
ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY PROGRAM NEWS & EVENTS
Agsploration - The Science of MD Agriculture, Winter Holiday Workshop
A three-time national award-winning program, AGsploration is a science-based 4-H curriculum designed to help youth explore the relationships between agriculture, the environment, and their health through engaging hands-on activities. For this workshop, let is snow, let it snow, let it snow! We'll learn about the Chesapeake Bay watershed, pollutants, and strategies we can each take to protect this valuable resource. We'll even build our own watershed model to learn how each of us create pollution in our daily lives - with a special emphasis on how the holidays in particular can impact our environment.
As a community service, youth will also make uplifting cards for other young adults that will be distributed in the coming weeks via a charity lunch distribution program in Baltimore.

STEM OPPORTUNITIES
Upcoming NASA - Goddard Programs
The Goddard Visitor Center team is excited to share information and programs for students, groups and families this Fall! The visitor center will be open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Activities will continue throughout the Fall, including the return of the in-person Sunday Experiment on the third Sunday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. For more information and to receive program email updates, e-mail: goddard-visitor-center-programs@lists.nasa.gov.
Events coming up include 3 virtual field trips. The first two events below have three parts: a series of short videos, a live interactive presentation with a Q&A session, and optional self-guided activities using common supplies on hand at home or at educational program locations. The third event is lecture-style with a Q&A session, as well as additional self-guided resources. These interactive presentations are taught live by a NASA education specialist and 45 minutes in length. Custom programs may be offered based on availability.
● Living and Working in Space, Kindergarten – 4th Grade
People are living and working in space right now! Participants will discover many of the different ways that scientists, engineers and astronauts have developed to help humans live in space. They will also learn about the parts of an astronaut’s spacesuit and then look at actual food items sent to the International Space Station.
● How to Build a Satellite, 5th – 8th Grade
Building a satellite takes many steps, requires help from a team, and needs creativity and innovation to make things work. Participants will explore the engineering design process and how scientists and engineers at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center use it to solve problems. They will also talk about components of a satellite with demonstrations focusing on infrared light.
● Goddard Overview, 9th Grade – Adult
With facilities in Maryland, Virginia, New Mexico, Texas, New York and West Virginia, Goddard is a place where a mission can go from start to finish — from planning to building to testing and even launching. Goddard is also involved in nearly every NASA science mission involving Earth science, planetary science, heliophysics (the study of the Sun and our local space environment), and astrophysics. Participants will receive an overview presentation focused on current missions. This program is lecture-style with a question-and-answer session and additional self-guided resources.

Senior aged youth are encouraged to apply for 'national' 4-H opportunities to meet new people, learn new things and experience new communities. Youth master a skill and then demonstrate what they've learned gaining valuable leadership and public speaking skills. Our county sends qualifying youth to National 4-H Trips and Project specific trips (Horse, Dairy, Livestock, poultry)! Consider attending one of these opportunities in 2023!
The 2022 Buz Meyer 4-H Turkey Shoot was hosted by the Friendship Outdoor Skills 4-H Club on Saturday, November 5, 2022, which happened to be the warmest Turkey Shoot any participants could remember! A total of 68 adults and youth participated in the two contests, and we had 8 Cloverbuds participate in special events just for them. The Anne Arundel County 4-H Foundation was in attendance selling county fair tee shirts, and the Friendship Outdoor Skills club members sold refreshments.
Cloverbuds learned all about the turkey, played games, went on a hike, and did a craft. Riflery contestants in Junior, Intermediate and Adult Women shot a paper target at 25 yards, while Seniors and Adult Men shot at the same paper target from 50 yards. Junior, Intermediate and Adult Women in the Archery contestant shot from 7 yards, while Seniors and Adult Men shot from 10 yards.
The Anne Arundel County 4-H Foundation generously donates a $20 cash prize to each winner, and sponsors and presents two memorial awards at the completion of the event. The James R. Kahler Youth Top 4-H Archer Award is awarded to the highest scoring youth in the archery portion of the contest.
