Dictionary.com says a firearm is "a small arms weapon, as a rifle or pistol, from which a projectile is fired by gunpowder.

It is unclear who actually invented the first firearm, as they go back 100s for years, starting in China with gunpowder, there were bamboo tubes used to shoot fire and chapel, but sir Hirman Maxis is said to have made the first "gun" in 1364

The modern firearm was devolved by the U.S military between 1498 and 1630

Most people will have a flintlock pistol. The flintlock did not come into use to around 1660. The correct version of the pistol would be, more than likely, the wheel-lock or matchlock pistol.

The first gun the hand cannon was a POS gunpowder filled stick, It was shortened and altered and what not, we went into an ara of flintlocks, and muskets, In 1509 the wheellock gun came out, Then onto the Colt revolver, Rifling became popular and then the invention of the machine gun came out, and the worlds gun industries exploded.
