Where every student thrives
Taylor Talk
Someone's perception is undeniably their reality, even if it's not entirely accurate. In today's digital age, where information spreads rapidly through social media, false narratives can easily take root without evidence to support them. It's essential to recognize the power of perception and the dangers of blindly accepting information, especially online. Instead, we can choose to prioritize positivity, kindness, and truthfulness in our interactions and communications. By fostering a culture of critical thinking and empathy, we can navigate through the noise of misinformation, promoting a more informed and compassionate society.

$5000 TVA STEM Grant for Wildcat Cafe
In my program, students engage in hands-on learning experiences that prepare them for real-world experiences. At the beginning of the year, our class started a project on how to create a business from scratch. The students have learned super valuable skills ranging from crafting business plans, creating logos, advertising to our target market, how to cost out a recipe and decide on a menu price, and more. Students also had the opportunity to get certified in ServSafe to ensure we know what safety measures to take when in the kitchen and serving food to our customers/students.
On Cafe days, students act as the employees of the business and practice skills such as customer service, working in a fast paced environment, learning how to collaborate as a group and work with co-workers / peers.
I am so grateful for the TVA STEM Grant money as it has allowed us to purchase some essential equipment such as new refrigerators, microwaves, coffee machines, and many other items that make this project possible. Because of these resources, our students have had the opportunity to dive deeper into what it is like to start up a business and work in a real-life type of environment.
What truly sets our project apart is not just its educational value but its profound impact on the community and students at West Limestone High School. Through the proceeds generated by our student-run café, we have been able to fund costs for additional class labs and projects, and also give back in meaningful ways. From serving at our local animal shelter and making donations of food and toys, supporting charitable programs like Operation Christmas Child, donated to our local Cattlemen's Association auction, where proceeds went towards funding high school scholarships, hosted our local Veterans during a veterans day luncheon and more!
Overall, our students are learning valuable skills through hands-on activity and actively contributing to the betterment of our society.

Field Trips
- To address problems with chronic absenteeism, students in Grades K-12 who accumulate 3 or more unexcused absences per semester will not be allowed to participate in field trips. Exceptions will be district-wide field trips.
- Note: Students who are suspended out of school (OSS) will not be allowed to participate in class or school field trips during that semester. Students who are assigned in-school suspension (ISS) for 4 or more incidents will not be allowed to participate in class or school field trips during that semester.
Dances & Field Days
- To address problems with chronic absenteeism, students in Grades K-12 who accumulate 18 or more absences, whether deemed excused or unexcused, are by definition chronically absent and will not be allowed to participate in non-academic school activities (e.g., prom, in-school games, dances, and field days).
Semester Exam Exemption
- Students with any unexcused absences will be required to take the semester exam in May.
E-Learning Days
- Students with any unexcused absences will not be allowed to use E-Learning days.
18 or More Absences
- A student is considered as having chronic absenteeism when the student has 18 or more absences regardless if the absences are excused or not.
- Negatively affects our school report card grade

Exam Exemption Opportunity
From the Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction: Mrs. Allison Usery & Secondary Coordinator: Michelle Mitchell
We are excited to be able to offer additional exam exemption opportunities for juniors this semester. Students will receive one exam exemption for each benchmark score on the March 2024 ACT + Writing State Contract Assessment. For example, if a student scores 18 on ACT English, the student would receive an exam exemption to use on the course of his/her choice. The exemption cannot be used for AP or dual enrollment courses as those exams are required. As we move toward spring testing, we hope this will give your students an extra incentive to try their best. We will work with instructional supervisors on a way to manage the data for you and your teachers. Please share this information with teachers and students!

TITLE I STATUS: We are a Title I School. Our status as a Title I School is determined by the percentage of students who qualify for free/reduced lunch. Title I Schools are provided federal money based on their rank of the percentage of free/reduced lunches within our school district. This money provides schools with the necessary funds to hire staff to reduce classroom sizes or interventionists who work with students to close achievement gaps. Some schools use the money to purchase software, provide professional development, or provide other instructional materials needed.
Based on last year's free-reduced lunch count, our school will receive about $148,824.12 which will be used to hire two teachers and two interventionists. Of that amount, $2276.17 will be used for Parent & Family Engagement. The committee chose to purchase paper that will be used to print i-Ready reports, progress reports, report cards, and other school-related activities to share with parents.
These funds are highly beneficial to our school, so please complete the free/reduced lunch application today at https://www.myschoolapps.com/Home/PickDistrict. The link is found on our webpage www.westlimestonehigh.org and on the District webpage www.lcsk12.org. Choose "Alabama" and then choose "Limestone County BOE" for our school district to start the application.
