Term 1, Week Nine, 25 March - 31 March 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S PEN
Tēnā koutou parents, students and whānau
This week marks the most significant week in the year for the Church. This is Holy Week. Holy week began last weekend with Palm Sunday when Jesus returned to Jerusalem on a donkey. For the rest of that week, the last week of his life, Jesus remained in Jerusalem. We don’t know much of what he did from Monday to Wednesday – perhaps he spent the time with friends or in a quiet place praying alone to God. We do know that on Holy Thursday he celebrated his last meal with his apostles (the last supper) and on Good Friday he was led to his crucifixion. Then on Easter Sunday he rose from the dead. This afternoon the College celebrated Holy Thursday with a full school liturgy in the Church. This liturgy focused on the Stations of the Cross in preparation for Good Friday. There are many celebrations held in the Church during this Easter weekend and we warmly welcome everyone in our community to join us during this time.
The long Easter weekend also offers us an opportunity to take some time out to be with family and friends. Please note that the Easter break from school goes from tomorrow, Good Friday, until (and including) Tuesday, 2 April.
It is great to see our students achieving highly across a diverse range of sporting and cultural events. Congratulations to all!
Earlier this week we circulated the draft student cellphone use policy to all families, students, and staff. Most families and students are aware that the Government has put a requirement on all schools banning students from using their cellphones during the school day. This includes lunch and morning tea times and must be in place for the beginning of Term 2. Our draft policy reflects this requirement. Your feedback on our draft policy is most welcome.
Have a wonderful Easter break and we look forward to seeing all students back at school by 8.30am on Wednesday, 3 April.

KARAKIA
Lord,
As we prepare to enter the mystery of these three most holy days,
we ask you to ignite our minds and hearts with the hope and promise of
Christ’s passion, death and resurrection.
Give us eyes to see Him in the breaking of the bread
and hearts that reach out to Him in service to one another.
We ask you this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

RACE UNITY SPEECH AWARDS
This year's Race Unity Speech Awards were held on Wednesday evening. The theme was "Te Taura Tangata - the Rope of Unity and focused on how we can incorporate the different strands of race, bringing all people together in one rope. We would like to congratulate Year 11 student, Rewi Nankivell who delivered his speech in Te Reo Māori and was awarded first place in the competition.
Rewi's kōrero centered on traditional Māori purakau or stories, with a particular focus on the tale of Māui fishing up the North Island. Rewi highlighted Māui as a symbol of racial harmony, emphasising how his story brings people together, united by the very whenua he shaped through his fishing expedition. Rewi represented our kura and his whānau exceptionally well. Ka mau te wehi, Rewi!
Rewi in full swing.
Rewi was well supported by his whānau.
SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS
WAKA AMA NATIONALS
Last week's Waka Ama Nationals, held in Rotorua, brought together a gathering of skilled paddlers from across New Zealand. Among the contenders was Jack Gifford, who emerged as a standout competitor. Competing against 43 students, Jack's exceptional performance earned him 1st place, clocking the fastest time out of 101 race times during the event.
But Jack wasn't the only one making waves. Our school's teams showcased remarkable prowess as well. Similarly, in the Girls W6 250m event, our team secured 6th place out of 74 teams, with their time ranking 20th out of 203 race times.
Thirteen students proudly represented our kura at the Nationals, displaying excellent sportsmanship ,determination and skill. Alongside Jack Gifford were Rory Gifford, Maiangi Windybank, Nelis Du Preez, Jaco Du Preez, Marcus Cairns-Edmonds, Rio Knight, Zeva Peard, Mikayla Wilson, Manaia Windybank, Charlotte Kingsford, Bella Jagusch, and Bonny Jagusch. Thank you to all the supporters who made this happen.

Yahni played a crucial role in the swim teams, securing second place in both the open and under-19 categories. His contributions extended to the ski relay, where he helped his team to second place, along with notable third-place finishes in the ski race and board relay events.
Alice demonstrated her proficiency in the under-19 division, particularly excelling in the double ski event where she won the gold medal. She also contributed significantly to her team's success by securing second place in the board relay event. We congratulate Yahni and Alice on their impressive performances.
