Happy Friday South Community!
This week was a busy one back from break at the South. The students had their own version of slime time live which was earned for getting donations from all 50 states. Mr. Dore and PTO President Mrs. Reddington got slimed in front of the whole school.
Grade 4 completed their ELA MCAS this week! I was so impressed by the hard work they showed throughout the two days of testing. At this point, the South is DONE with ELA MCAS testing in Grades 3-5. We start MATH MCAS testing the week of May 6th.
The week culminated with our SHARK Student of the Month Assembly and our Kindergarten & Grade 2 Spring concert. It was great to see such an incredible audience for this event! Thank you to our music teacher, Mr. Curley, for preparing our students for this musical performance. Great job Kindergarten and Second Grade students!!!
The South School Theater program has a production of Willy Wonka coming up next week. This is the culmination of months of rehearsals. The entire school will see the production next Friday morning. We are also holding an evening performance next Thursday at 6pm. There are a very limited number of tickets available to the public. If you are interested please fill out the google form. Tickets are first come, first served. You will receive an email confirming your tickets early next week based on availability. Thank you to our Musical Director Mrs. Buck and the Musical Team: Mrs. Laquidara (Choreography), Ms. Montello (Set Design) and Mr. Curley (Music) for their dedication to this group throughout the year. We are looking forward the the upcoming Grade 4 & 5 production!
We do have a number of exciting events in store to including our (now earned) whole school field trip to Camp Maplewood! More information to come on all of these exciting events. Please see the events and calendar below for reminders on upcoming school events, etc.
We have some exciting new information on the New Building Project. Please see the release below:
We are excited to share that the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) Board of Directors voted to approve the project scope and budget for the new elementary school building project at its meeting on April 24.
This vote included approval of the plan to build a new elementary school to accommodate a larger enrollment, allowing us to go from the current number of five elementary schools to four elementary schools (the new building along with the Dawe, Gibbons, and Hansen). This vote also makes the town eligible for more than $47 million in funding from the state.
Obtaining MSBA Board approval is a significant milestone in the project timeline. The next steps are to get approval of the project from Town Meeting members in May and from Stoughton voters in June.
“This is a step forward for the students of SPS as we provide the opportunity to build our first 21st century elementary school. This has the potential to provide long term gains for students and the community. We, the Stoughton Elementary School Building Committee, are thankful for the positive vote of the MSBA Board of Directors and Treasurer Goldberg,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Baeta said.

There will also be a public forum sharing the latest updates about this project on Monday, April 29 at 6:30pm at the current South Elementary School, 171 Ash St. All SPS families, Stoughton residents, and Town Meeting members are invited to attend.

Update from Nurse Kaplan
Please remember to send in a change of clothing for your child to keep in the classroom or their backpack. There have been many students ( younger and older) recently who have needed clothing from the clinic. It is always more comfortable for students to have their own clothing when needed rather than trying to fit into clothing from the clinic that is too big or not their style. If clothing is borrowed, please launder and return it as soon as possible. Thanks so much.
