TRAVELERS 2ND GRADE LITERACY AND HISTORY LESSON

Ms. Cox used a large time line pasted onto the whiteboard at the front of the class to anchor her lesson. Learning involved a vibrant back and forth discussion with students about the content of their recent readings. When talking about the Lewis and Clark expedition or the Erie Canal she placed relevant photos onto the timeline. The students were proud to share their knowledge and understanding with Ms. Cox and their peers. 3-8-2024

CLiF's 2024 TWO-SENTENCE WRITING CONTEST

Calling young writers in Vermont and New Hampshire! CLiF’s 2024 Two-Sentence Writing Contest is officially open to submissions! Last year’s inaugural contest racked up over 700 submissions, and we’re hoping to receive even more this year. Without further ado, we present this year’s challenge:

In exactly two sentences (no more, no less!), tell us a “sky story.”

  • This story could be about something you saw in the sky.
  • This story could be about something that happens in the sky.
  • This story could be straight out of your imagination. (Maybe you’re skateboarding on a rainbow? Using clouds as trampolines? Chatting with the birds as you fly high above the earth together? Up to you!)

The only rules are that your entry must be an original story by you, and you have just two sentences to tell it!

Entries must be either received by email or postmarked by Friday, March 29, 2024.

ROBOT ADVENTURES - HAPPENING THROUGH MARCH

As seen in the below video, robots at City school are suffering from winter boredom. They had so much fun during the month of code in December but now are tucked away in their boxes awaiting adventure. What does this have to do with you? Your class can help give the robots a vacation. Simply let the STEAM team know which robot you want and when! We will deliver the robots to you-- ready to go!

https://www.wevideo.com/view/3328938796

AND as an incentive....the class that gives the robot the best vacation will win a robot for their classroom! (contest goes through the end of March)

Not sure which robot to choose? Our makerspace website lists all the robots we have (as well as the quantity) and has a video showing how they work with each one, as well as details on ease of use OR just reach out and we can help match your class with an appropriate robot. Here is the link to the robot website:

BECOMING RBG

From the New York Times bestselling author of I Dissent comes a young adult biographical graphic novel about celebrated Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a modern feminist icon—a leader in the fight for equal treatment of girls and women in society and the workplace. She blazed trails to the peaks of the male-centric worlds of education and law, where women had rarely risen before.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg has often said that true and lasting change in society and law is accomplished slowly, one step at a time. This is how she has evolved, too. Step by step, the shy little girl became a child who questioned unfairness, who became a student who persisted despite obstacles, who became an advocate who resisted injustice, who became a judge who revered the rule of law, who became…RBG.

AROUND AMERICA TO WIN THE VOTE

The author of Mesmerized delivers another fascinating glimpse into history, this time the story of two brave suffragists on a trek across America to spread the word: Votes for Women!

In April 1916, Nell Richardson and Alice Burke set out from New York City in a little yellow car, embarking on a bumpy, muddy, unmapped journey ten thousand miles long. They took with them a teeny typewriter, a tiny sewing machine, a wee black kitten, and a message for Americans all across the country: Votes for Women! The women’s suffrage movement was in full swing, and Nell and Alice would not let anything keep them from spreading the word about equal voting rights for women. Braving blizzards, deserts, and naysayers—not to mention a whole lot of tires stuck in the mud—the two courageous friends made their way through the cities and towns of America to further their cause.
