We are so proud to announce that both of our junior high schools–Blach Intermediate and Egan Junior High–received the prestigious California Distinguished School Award this month.

The California Distinguished Schools program recognizes schools for their excellent work in one of two categories: closing the achievement gap and achieving exceptional student performance by analyzing data reported through the California Department of Education’s School Dashboard. LASD’s student achievement scores reflected excellence in both categories. The award program returned in 2023 after the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily suspended reporting of state and local student data in 2020.

In 2023, the Distinguished School Award focused on elementary schools. That year, six of the school district’s elementary schools–Almond, Covington, Gardner Bullis, Loyola, Santa Rita and Springer–were awarded the 2023 California Distinguished School Award. Oak Elementary School won the award in 2020.

We want to thank our teachers, staff, students and families for all of their support and hard work to make our schools among the very best, helping us to achieve these incredible awards!

On March 21, Blach's Honors Orchestra performed at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco! The performance was part of an orchestral competition for students across the region. The performance was incredible and these talented student musicians earned excellent scores in the competition. One of the judges wrote, "Highest score I've given in years! Well done."

Out of 100 points, three judges awarded the Blach Honors Orchestra 94, 97 and 97 points for their performance--outstanding indeed! A special thanks to Vincent Lewis, the Blach instrumental music teacher, who conducted the orchestra and mentored these incredible musicians.
