O.E.S. Owls Nest News
News & Upcoming Events
Good Morning OES families!
This week will be a short week of school, students return on Wednesday! We are scheduled to have Winter Sports on Friday. I'm hopeful the snow will last for another trip to Burke Mountain!
The Friday afternoon before vacation, OES celebrated filling our OWL'S Nest once again! All students participated in multi-age groups rotating through a variety of stations that focused on building school community, teamwork, and of course lots of laughter! The afternoon ended with a dance party in the gym with our in house DJ - Mike Tanguay!
Upon our return to school, students will have the opportunity to participate in training sessions and practice test to help prepare them to take the VTCAP (VT Comprehensive Assessment Program). These opportunities will enable them to gain familiarity with the tools available for their use on the assessments. All students in grades 3-8 will participate in assessments focused on mathematics and language arts. In addition, students in grades 5 & 8 will also take a science assessment. The OES team has created a schedule for testing - although some alterations to this schedule may have to be made. Please see the attached letter providing additional assessment information.
OES has been a busy place over vacation. All the fluorescent lightbulbs in the building were replaced with LED lightbulbs, and the flooring in the second grade classroom was finished. Mr. Tanguay has been airing out the building, and performing some additional disinfecting preparing for our return. Hopefully the numerous illnesses that plagued our building prior to vacation will not return!
Enjoy the remaining days of vacation. I'll see everyone on Wednesday!
As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Umbrella Presentations for Grades 5-8
Hannah Cornelius, the Prevention Specialist at Umbrella North and a co-coordinator of the ONE Prevention Coalition will be visiting our school on March 19, April 9, and April 23 to work with students in grades 5-8.
Below is some information about the program.
The curriculum I will be facilitating is called Choose to Refuse and it is an evidence based
program specifically geared towards middle school students, grades 5-8. It is based on the work of Dr. Elias J Duryea and uses principles defined by The Office of National Drug Control Policy. It addresses substances such as nicotine, cannabis, alcohol and more dangerous substances as well.
The Choose to Refuse program helps to teach youth how to resist using substances by educating youth on the impact substances have on their bodies. Students will learn important decision making skills which will assist them in handling a situation in which drugs are offered. They will also develop strategies to either refuse substances or remove themselves from the situation.

After School Program
The past two weeks students were working hard during the after school program. The older students continued to cook for the community by making breakfast burritos and loaded potato soup. The younger students made pancakes and had chopped vegetables with a yogurt dip. In Lego club students were exceptional in completing their challenges. Dance class is always having fun while learning a new dance each week. Lastly, In STEAM the students had to build structures using marshmallows and spaghetti. Our goal is to learn new things and have fun at the same time!
