Martin School Family Update
April 6, 2024 (The Saturday Edition)
Hero Recess
Dear Martin Families and Caregivers,
This week can best be summarized as a celebration of community and kindness. At the start of the week, we were joined by local heroes for a "Hero Recess." People from the military, NAPD, and NAFD played basketball, tag, and even jumped rope with students! A special thank you to Mrs. Curran for organizing this!
Mid-week, 4th and 5th graders learned from humanitarian and author, Salvador Gomez-Colon, about ways he helped his community after surviving Hurricane Maria in 2017. He emphasized to students how they could lead change and make a difference in people's lives--regardless of age.
Later in the week, Rob Surette painted for 4th and 5th graders while a video was played with messages of peace, being kind to one another, and the importance of following one's dreams. See below for one of his latest paintings (Gandhi!) which will be added to our cafeteria wall!

Kindness 102 Club
After learning about the ways people have made a difference in other people's lives through Steve Hartman's Kindness 101 project, third grade students, Emma Rizzo and Holly Winters, put together a plan to organize group activities for children who were looking for something to do during recess. They named the group Kindness 102. Emma and Holly developed a list of activities for students to play, Google Slides introducing the group to other students, and a schedule. They even had an official meeting with the Principal to discuss details! As a result of their hard work and the support of Mrs. Stewart, the students held their first activity group this week! What an incredible example of kindness, compassion, and leadership.
Emma and Holly, we are all so proud of you!
Mrs. Leco's Giving Trees
Mrs. Leco’s Giving Tree’s will be collecting boxed goods Tuesday March 26- Tuesday April 9.
It is not too late to donate to Lenore’s Pantry to help those in need right here in our community. So far we have collected 96 boxes - Please help us reach our school wide goal of 500 boxes -(one box per student).
If we meet our goal, we will have “Domino Challenge” at Martin! The more boxes we collect the longer the domino chain will be! Ask your kids about the video they saw in class. Let’s come together as a community and help stock Lenore’s Pantry!
Thank you so much for your continued support and generosity!!
Donation ideas:
*Any nonperishable items in a box!

Welcome, Gandhi! Thank you, Rob Surrette, for sharing your talent with us!
Monday's Solar Eclipse
On Monday, April 8, a total eclipse will be headed toward New England. Though Massachusetts is not within the pathway of totality, it is predicted that residents in our state may be able to see up to 95% coverage of the sun by the moon! The eclipse is anticipated to be from 2-4:30pm.
Though this celestial event is special and doesn't happen often, it is never safe to look directly at the sun. On Monday, teachers will remind students of this and will be giving students special glasses to view the eclipse with. Before your children head back to school on Monday, please talk to them about the coming eclipse and to wear eclipse glasses when viewing the eclipse for their safety.
As always, thank you for your partnership and support. We are all looking forward to Monday's magic in the sky!
