School Property Closed
Akron School Students, Parents and Community,
Starting sometime this Friday, March 8th through Tuesday, March 12th, access to our school property will be strictly limited due to work being done on our building and playground. The final stages of the HVAC project are underway and new equipment will be added to our playground. The playground will likely be off limits the entire week of March 11th. These are both great improvements to our facility. We wanted to make you aware of these restrictions and improvements.
Have a great spring break next week!

National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test
The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a standardized test administered by the College Board and cosponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in the United States. We had two students take the test in October from the junior class, Merek Charney and Caleb Poss. Both their scores meet the requirements for the 2025 National Merit Program and their index scores will be considered among the 1.3 million program entrants. If their Selection Index places them among the 50,000 high scorers who qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Program recognition, they will be notified next September when qualifying Selection Index scores will be made available. They are eligible for the National Recognition Program under the National Rural and Small Town Recognition Program. This means that they can qualify for a prestigious college scholarship and other scholarships for just being recognized. This is a huge accomplishment for Caleb and Merek. Congratulations boys!
Lions Club Speech Contest
The Akron Lions Club hosted their 2nd Annual Youth Speech Contest this past Thursday afternoon at AHS. There were 8 participants that did a wonderful job preparing a 5-7 minute speech on the topic “Do you have the courage to change the world through service, transforming community, and working together, and in what ways would/could you do this?”.
Each contestant presented in front of a panel of four judges and were scored on the text alone, delivery of the speech, and the overall impact of the speech. All eight contestants had very moving speeches that were well presented. The winner got an invite to speak at the Regional Lions Club Convention and a $50 cash prize. The top 3 were selected based off scores and are as follows.
3rd place- Elyse Jackson
2nd place- Sierra Brown
1st place- Taylor Benish
