EBC Family,

In preparation for the April 28th Quarterly Business Meeting, I wanted to share the reasoning behind the coming recommendations from Personnel and Budget and Finance to hire Chelsea Simpson as our part-time Children’s Minister (birth - 6th grade).

One of our Ministry Assistants, Stephenie Bunce, is moving to Texas. Her last day with us will be Friday, May 10. As our Personnel Committee considered the best use of our ministry staff resources, three primary factors led them to consider hiring for another position rather than replacing Stephenie.

1) Our church doesn’t currently have anyone focused on leading and developing our ministry to children and their families; plus our previous Nursery Coordinator, Sherry Gooch, retired in December.

2) Katie Ramirez, our other Ministry Assistant, was confident that she can accomplish the weekly Ministry Assistant responsibilities in 20 hours a week. (We were previously paying for 30 hours a week between Katie and Stephenie.)

3) One of our church members offered to answer phones for the office a couple of hours each afternoon on a voluntary basis to free up salary.

These factors led our Personnel Committee to consider reallocating our resources to a Children’s Minister. Chelsea Simpson immediately came to mind for consideration for the position as she has faithfully served in our Preschool and Children’s Ministry for over a decade. Upon interviewing her, the Committee was excited about the enthusiasm and competency that Chelsea could bring to this ministry and voted unanimously to recommend her to EBC.

The Personnel Committee asked the Budget and Finance Committee to consider reallocating money from Stephenie Bunce and Sherry Gooch’s former salaries to fund this new position. The Finance Committee voted unanimously to make that recommendation to EBC.

Here are the financial details - there is NOT an increase to our 2024 Budget:

Create a new Children’s Minister line item at $11,700 funded by transfers from existing line items as follows:

Reduce the Administrative Assistant salary from $20,000 to $11,960 - a savings of $8,040.

Reduce the Nursery Worker salary from $6,500 to $3,340 - a savings of $3,160. (This is the line item where Sherry Gooch’s salary was funded).

Transfers of $8,040 + $3,160 = $11,700 for the new Children’s Minister line item.

I am grateful for the willingness of these two Committees to think outside the box and consider how to best use our resources for effective ministry. I am excited about the potential of Chelsea joining our Ministry Team to provide leadership and new vision for our Preschool and Children’s Ministry!
