Principal Notes
I hope you all are doing well and gearing up for a nice spring! It is here! Below are a few things to communicate to you and upcoming dates to put on the calendar!!
Retake Policy- Don’t forget about the WMS retake policy that everyone can and should take advantage of!
In order to improve student learning and increase mastery of state standards, students will have the opportunity to retake major summative assessments by correcting errors on the attempted original test*. The newly corrected answers must be accompanied by a sentence to explain why the change in answer. The retake policy does not apply to projects or formal writing assessments that include multiple checkpoints and/or rubric. All students who score below a 70 will be allowed to complete test corrections, and the highest possible score a student can receive from a retake is a 70. Retakes must be completed within five instructional days after the original test took place. This does not apply to mid-term and final exams.
*The retake assessment can be determined by the teacher at their discretion.
Incentive Day- Now that middle schools no longer are required to give final exams, we would like to offer an incentive day to all students that meet the requirements below. This means that during that certain class of met requirement, they will be allowed to go outside like an extra recess. The incentive day will be Thursday, May 23, 2024. Get those grades up Warriors!
-A student must have a final grade (F1) of 90 or above by May 17, 2024.
-English 1 HN, Alg 1 and Fund of Comp classes have an attendance component to it as it is a high school credit. You must not exceed ten absences for the year.
Parent Climate Survey 2024- We need all parents to complete the parent climate survey! It is a very short process and you can do it right from your phone! Parent Climate Survey Directions

Attention 8th Grade Parents
It's hard to believe that it's time to start making preparations for the 8th grade Promotion Ceremony that will take place in May. As part of this event, we need a baby picture of your child. Please submit your child’s picture on the link provided below, or you can email it to Mrs. Grate at jgrate@gcsd.k12.sc.us. You may also send in a copy of the picture with your child’s name on it. Please remember WMS is not responsible for any lost or damaged pictures. Please have these pictures in by April 1st 2024.
IGP Information
The South Carolina Education and Economic Development Act (EEDA) requires middle schools to implement an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) for all 8th grade students. These plans are determined during a scheduled meeting with your child's guidance counselor, Mrs. Williams. At this meeting we will be creating academic/career goals for your child and selecting their 9th grade high school courses. It is strongly encouraged that a parent/guardian attends the meeting with their child so they can be involved in the high school planning process. To schedule the IGP meeting with your child, please visit
https://calendly.com/kimwilliamswms/individualized-graduation-plan-meetings to book your in-person appointment with Mrs. K. Williams at Waccamaw Middle School. All IGP’s must be completed by Friday, April 26, 2024.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at kiwilliams@gcsd.k12.sc.us or at 843-237-0106. I look forward to meeting with you and your child to help plan for their future.
