Eagle Connection #23
Week of February 19-25 2024
Updates for the Week
Hello Wilkesboro families.
We hope that your family is enjoying today’s sunshine. We'd like to remind you there is no school for students, tomorrow, Monday, February 19. It is a teacher workday. We are calling with updates for the week of February 19-24. You can find full details below on this Eagle Connection page.
We want to invite your family to PTO Family Night this Thursday, February 22. We have special musical performances by our 2nd and 3rd graders in the gym, and we will also show a great short film for parents called SCREENAGERS: Growing Up in the Digital Age. We’ve also planned a free meal for your families and something for the kids to do while parents watch. Please see the handout in your child’s folder and ClassDojo for full details.
Our PTO family dance is coming up next Sunday from 3:00 - 5:00. Our gym will be transformed into an enchanted forest, and families can gather to spend time together, dance, and enjoy delicious treats.
Some families use this as an opportunity to dress up and have an affordable, memorable day out. PTO will have a photographer on hand to capture this special event. Please make your reservations no later than Tuesday. You can request tickets through a link and QR code on our EAGLE CONNECTION page. Families are encouraged to reserve tickets in advance as there will be a limited number at the door. Here is a link to order tickets: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/16PWsy9Sk0IEkd7LaymbSWkOQIPgMcMqB9jgPcUCImU0/viewform?edit_requested=true
PTO also wants us to remind you that our Village Inn Spirit Night has been moved to February 29th due to PTO family night.
On Wednesday, your child will receive a progress report. This report will include supplemental parent reports from middle of year assessments. It is important to take time to thoroughly review these reports, talk with your child, and reach out to your teacher for help or more information if needed.
Thank you for your amazing support of our Kids Heart Challenge. As of today, we have raised over $7,000 to help the American Heart Association. We are very close to having half of our students registered, and we need your help. Our school gets PE equipment if students sign up online, even if no donation is made. It’s not too late to sign up. Friday is our final turn in day for the program. You can find full details online. Also on Friday, we will celebrate WES Spirit Day and monthly birthday celebrations. Please wear your green and gold to show your Eagle pride and participate in a friendly competition to see which class has the most spirit. Thanks to PTO for sponsoring this event.
You can still order your 2024 yearbook by returning the envelope and payment to school OR by ordering directly online from our website by March 15. https://wes.wilkescountyschools.org/apps/news/article/1871573
We want to thank you for your ongoing support, encouragement and cooperation. We are grateful to our Wilkesboro Elementary family, and we look forward to another great week! Have a good evening!
Please Come to PTO Family Night on February 22!
We hope your family will join us for PTO Family Night that is happening Thursday, February 22. The night will kick off with a free hot dog supper for families in our cafeteria between 5:00 - 6:00. We have hot dogs, chips, cookies, and drinks provided by Can-Do catering available for families. Our playgrounds will also be open for family visits during this time.
We are excited to invite parents and children 4th grade and older to watch the movie Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age in the gym at 6:00. We all struggle with managing our time on devices, and this movie explores parental struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet use. There’s no judgment in this movie, just information and solutions to help kids and families find balance in the digital age. You can read more about the movie on their website - https://www.screenagersmovie.com/
Parents can check WES pre-k through 5th grade students into their child’s classroom beginning at 5:30, and our staff will supervise and engage your student in games and fun activities. This will free up parents to watch the 45-minute movie in the gym. Parents of 4th & 5th grade students can choose whether to bring their children to watch the movie with them or stay in classrooms with teachers. While we regret that we cannot offer childcare for younger children, parents are welcome to bring them with you to the gym.
After the film, we will make a quick transition to get ready to enjoy musical performances by our 2nd and 3rd graders in the gym.
It’s a busy evening, and your family is invited to join us for whatever parts interest you. We hope that you will enjoy the visit to our school and learn more about how to support your child. Have a great evening!
PTO Online Store Open with New Stuff!
Our WES PTO has an online store where you can buy WES shirts, sweatshirts, and products. Recently, they've added toboggans and vintage WES gear.
This store will run continuously through the rest of the school year. Orders will be pulled each month on the second Monday of the month. Depending on when the order is placed it may take up to 4 - 5 weeks to receive your order. Once orders are pulled they will be processed within 10 - 12 business days. PTO members will deliver products directly to your child's classroom.
You can find the online store at the link below.

We Need Volunteers!
We welcome volunteers to help with school events. WCS uses Volunteer Tracker to help organize this process, and we use Sign Up Genius (shared via email and ClassDojo) to make signing up easy and convenient. To get signed up, follow steps below.
1. Go to www.wilkescountyschools.org
2. Go to the PARENTS tab at the top (or VOLUNTEER at the bottom).
3. Click on VOLUNTEERS.
4. Click on VOLUNTEER TRACKER.
5. Go to the green NEW REGISTRATION and follow instructions from there.
Level 1 volunteers can help in many ways. Level 1 volunteers can sign up to help with book fairs, school events, class parties and projects, Field Day, Fall Festival, and proctoring for tests.
Level 2 volunteers can do all level 1 tasks but can also help chaperone field trips and work more closely with students in small groups. Level 2 volunteers can also sign up for classroom tutoring and assistance, reading buddy program, tutoring, leading after school activities, and chaperoning school events field trips.
We ask that all parents/guardians who plan to attend field trips sign up to be Level 2 volunteers at the start of the year. It takes a few weeks to verify volunteers, and signing up early will make sure that you are approved in time for this year’s events and field trips.
Car Line Helpers Needed!
We are looking for friend, positive people to help on morning carline. If you're interested, please complete this form and we will be in touch. Thanks for considering this volunteer opportunity!

About Attendance
School starts at 7:50 each day. Students who are participating will be marked PRESENT or ABSENT. If your child is not in school, you will need to send in absence notes the next day and it will be coded as excused or unexcused. Written notes are required and can come directly from the parent/guardian or a medical office. Also note that ClassDojo messages are great for communicating an absence, but they do NOT serve as legal documentation of absences. Please send a written note. Thanks in advance for your help!
