A Message from the Principal
Dear ALMS Families,
I trust this message finds you well as we reflect on the vibrancy of our school community. It's been a busy week at ALMS, and I'm excited to share some highlights and upcoming events that will ignite excitement and connection among us all.
Our Student Council members recently brought joy and companionship to Willow Towers Nursing Home residents. Engaging in activities like bingo and exercise sessions, our students formed meaningful connections that warmed the hearts of all involved. Witnessing their compassion and empathy in action is a testament to the values we cherish at our school.
Meanwhile, our Media Club has been hard at work crafting fresh content, including our weekly Weather Report. Tune in to catch the latest updates from our budding meteorologists. Additionally, stay tuned for upcoming features like Teacher Spotlights and Blue Couch Interviews, where we celebrate our school community's diverse talents and perspectives.
Looking ahead, mark your calendars for our upcoming Girls Leadership Conference on March 16th. This empowering event promises a day of learning, self-expression, and connection. Join us for inspiring guest speakers and engaging discussions aimed at fostering leadership, confidence, and resilience in our young women. Parents are invited to a Women's Panel discussion covering topics such as self-care and understanding the experiences of our girls from their perspectives.
As our 8th graders near the end of their middle school journey, we're planning special events to honor their achievements. Details and payment information for these celebrations can be found in the attached calendar.
Family Bingo Night on April 11th promises to be a delightful evening of fun, prizes, and family bonding. Whether you're a bingo enthusiast or new to the game, join us in the school cafeteria for a memorable time filled with laughter and excitement.
Next week, ALMS will participate in practice Computer Based Testing (CBT) Exams. We are confident in our students' abilities and have been preparing them for success through technology exposure and practice simulations. These opportunities are designed to build comfort with the CBT platform and gather valuable feedback on our technology capabilities.
Your support, enthusiasm, and involvement make Albert Leonard Middle School a vibrant and unique place for our students to learn, grow, and thrive. Thank you for being an integral part of our community.
Warm regards,
Dr. Edwards-Thomas

SEL DAY
March 8th is SEL Day! Students had the opportunity to participate in lunchroom activity facilitated by SEL Social Worker, Mrs. Johnson. Students selected which of the five SEL competencies they would be mindful of for SEL Day.
Students were also given tactile mindfulness stickers, which guide them on deep breathing, and a "Feelings Wheel" to help them explore the language of feelings on a deeper level. Staff were given bubbles as a reminder to take a deep breath and to practice self care.
ALMS' social emotional learning theme for the month is Self Awareness which is the ability to understand one's emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior. Self awareness impacts all of the five competencies and we encourage students to practice self awareness through mindfulness this month. Students can stop by the SEL board to view journal prompts such as "how do I feel today," "what are some hopes you have for the future," etc.
Student Council Visits Willow Towers
On Thursday, the Student Council visited Willow Towers. They played BINGO with residents, they played chess with them, exercised with them, danced with them, and gave out almost 80 gift bags. Students met a Noble Peace Prize winner, a teacher, a resident who attended ALMS, and so many other wonderful residents. It was a fantastic visit!

Blue Couch Interview: What are you reading?
Dear Parents/Guardians:
We hope all is well with you and your family. It felt like yesterday when our eighth-grade students came to us as eager sixth graders. As the start of their final marking periods of middle school approaches, we are looking ahead to the next phase of their lives.
Over the last few weeks and moving forward, we have been ramping up our efforts to prepare them for their transition to high school. This includes meeting with their counselors for course selection and a virtual orientation for families and parents that provides greater insight into life at New Rochelle High School.
The 8th-grade year culminates with a series of activities designed to celebrate the achievements of our students. These include the 8th-grade Formal Dance at the VIP Country Club, a day trip to Holiday Hill, Awards Night, and the Transition Ceremony. The dates and costs for each event are in this message. Please look for further details on each event as the dates approach.
Throughout your child’s time here, they have been held to our school's highest academic rigor and expectations. We want to remind you that basic requirements must be met to participate in any/all end-of-year eighth-grade activities. Participation in these events is contingent upon students meeting behavioral and academic standards. Please note the following:
Academic Exclusions:
● Students with failures in two or more major academic subjects will be excluded from participation in 8th Grade Activities
Behavioral Exclusions:
● Students who continually engage in violations of the code of conduct
● Students who demonstrate ongoing rude and disrespectful behavior towards adults and others
● Students who continue to be late and or attempt to cut class
If you are concerned that your child may not meet the academic and/or behavioral qualifications/expectations, please contact your school counselor. Mr. Smith, the 8th-grade Administrator, can field any inquiries about your child's eligibility for participation in upcoming events.
We look forward to the coming months and exciting times ahead. Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Edwards-Thomas, Principal
Mr. Smith, Assistant Principal
Ms. Carew and Ms. D’Ippolito, 8th Grade Co-Advisors
