FULL DAY ABSENCE REQUESTS
Let's Make A Splash!
This year's theme is Rain or Shine: Everybody Reads. Students are asked to record every book that they read or that someone reads to them on the book tracker. They are asked to return this tracker on each of their library days. When they come to the library they will be able to hang a raindrop for each book they read. The Oscar Howe Goal this year is to read 9,500 books. Last year we read 9,413. That's a lot of books!!!! The city-wide goal is 300,000 books.

Principal Message
Dear Oscar Howe Families,
It is hard to believe it is already March! Though we already had a taste of the spring-like temperatures we will be officially moving into the spring season this month. We will be entering into a new season, as well as, a new quarter of learning this month. We have several fun events happening this month.
We will be celebrating Read Across America week March 4-8th. There will be themed dress up days that coincide with a type of book to read. Please consider joining in on the fun by reading books with your child(ren) that coincide with each day’s theme. Students will also have a tracker to keep track of the books they read, including at school and home! Our goal is to read 9,500 books as a building for the month of March.
We are hosting our Science Fair/Art Show on March 12th . All students are encouraged to participate. Information has gone home with students and posted on our Facebook page to register as a participant. Also, students in first, third and fifth grade will have art displayed throughout the building for families to enjoy.
If you have an incoming kindergartener or know someone who does, please join us for our Kindergarten Open House on March 7th from 4:00-6:00 p.m. We will have a few of our kindergarten teachers here to answer questions. This is also a time we can finalize your enrollment and make copies of birth certificates, immunization records and address verification. We hope you join us if you have an incoming kindergartener!
Third quarter will be wrapping up on March 20th . During the second semester students continue to build on their skills and deepen their understanding of concepts. It is important for students to be on time, so they do not miss out on instruction. We want students to be able to fully participate in the wonderful learning that is taking place in their rooms.
SFSD Lunch Program
Reminder: When an account has any negative balance, breakfast cannot be charged. When an account hits a negative (-)$20 balance, a Smart Snack and milk will be served instead of a hot meal and the student will be charged $1.
Smart Snacks will be served until the account has a negative balance of (-)$75. At that time, no meal or Smart Snack can be offered to students.
If your family has not completed a Free/Reduced Meal Application form this year please do so! You can apply by accessing the following link:

Community Learning Center
Formerly Kids Inc.
Sioux Falls School District partners with community providers in a Community Learning Center (CLC) model for out-of-school time and summer enrichment programs. The collaborative program, located in elementary schools, provides a safe, licensed environment for students with embedded learning opportunities, enhancement activities, and a focus on developing skills that will last a lifetime.
School-based out-of-school time and summer enrichment programs are managed by a Community Partner and supported by a governing structure within the Sioux Falls School District. The programs follow a unified standard for operating to ensure consistency and continuity among locations.
The complementary learning environment provides exceptional quality care while enhancement activities and interest clubs offer students opportunities to engage in STEM, sports, dance, cooking, life-skill development, and more. Homework help and directed tutoring programs extend learning beyond the school day.

A Note From Nurse Azeb
Antibiotic Use
· Do not stop taking them when you feel better, or the illness may return. They are designed to work only when taken in full.
· Do not share your antibiotics with others.
· Do not save them for later. Talk to your pharmacist about safely discarding leftover medicines.
· Do not take antibiotics prescribed for someone else.
The PTA is an important community and one way to support students and teachers, and make our school a better place. Whether you have had kids at Oscar Howe for years or this is the first time walking the halls, we hope you will get involved, share your ideas, volunteer in classrooms and at events, and get to know other families.
Yours truly,
Oscar Howe PTA
