March 2024 Edition
As we find ourselves already in the latter half of March, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for partnering with us on the incredible journey we've embarked on together thus far through school year 2023-2024. With the spring season bursting upon us, it's time to reflect on how far we have come and also refresh ourselves for the final push to the end of the school year. As we embrace the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead, let us continue to work together in fostering a community of learning and excellence in and out of the classroom. Together, we will finish this school year strong and emerge even stronger for next school year! Please review the information in this newsletter along with continue to stay abreast of all things St. Georges through our regular calls, emails, and our social media outlets.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication to St. Georges! Go Hawks!

News You Can Use
School Safety & Security-Raptor: We are implementing a new visitor check-in process to improve safety measures at St. Georges. The system that we are using District-wide is through Raptor Technologies known as the Raptor. The system involves a visitor check-in process where individuals entering the school are required to provide identification, such as a driver's license. The system then checks the identification against databases of known sex offenders and other potentially dangerous individuals. If a match is found, the system alerts us. Again, the purpose of the system is to improve the safety of students, staff, and visitors by monitoring and screening individuals entering our school. Please see attachment below for more information.
Course Scheduling for Next School Year: School counselors will be meeting with students to gather and input course request information for next school year. Parents who have questions about scheduling should reach out to their student’s school counselor. For your child's school counselor, please see below.
State Testing Update:
SAT and PSAT - makeup testing will run throughout the last week in March.
Students in Grade 10 will take the DeSSA State Assessment in Biology this Spring. The testing window opens on April 8th and runs through May.
Students in Grade 11 will take the DeSSA State Assessment in Social Studies this Spring. The testing window opens on April 8th and runs through May.
Junior Dual Enrollment & Summer Original Credit Meetings: All Juniors will attend a class presentation about senior course requirements that includes information about original credit coursework over the summer and Dual Enrollment offerings for their senior year. Parents and guardians of Juniors should look for information about summer original credit and dual enrollment during the fourth marking period. Please note the following:
Dates, deadlines, and parameters for summer original credit are the same for the whole district and are not flexible. Families should ensure that they can comply with all of these prior to signing up for summer original credit.
Senior Dual Enrollment classes meet at St. Georges during the school day. Attendance is mandatory for all classes for the duration of the class period. Students and families should take this into consideration when determining if dual enrollment courses are a fit for your student.
Following the student presentation, the school will send the contents of the presentation out to our families via email so that our parents and guardians have access to the information for review and discussion with your student.
Parent Night Feedback: At NCCVT, we are committed to continuously trying to improve our practices. To that end, we are asking for your feedback on Parent Night. Parent Night is the annual event that takes place in late September whereby parents/guardians can meet each of their child's teachers and learn about each course, typically by following an abbreviated version of their child's schedule. Parent/guardian attendance at Parent Night has been consistently low for several years. We know there are many possible reasons for this. We are, therefore, re-evaluating this event to see how it could be enhanced while also exploring other options that may better facilitate parent-teacher engagement. Your input is important to us as we undertake this re-evaluation. Please access the link at https://forms.gle/JMytZnN76VWpGhmY8 to complete a short survey. Thank you in advance for your feedback.
NCCVT Artificial Intelligence General Guidance: The landscape of education is every-evolving in the area of technology. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are the latest example of technological shifts in education. AI has the potential to contribute to teaching and learning in meaningful ways through its capacity to personalize instruction, assess student performance, and streamline administrative tasks. For these reasons, the New Castle County VoTech School District will responsibly embrace the transformative potential of AI. Winter Sports Recap
Girls Basketball
Our girls basketball team had a wonderful season on and off the court! Our team grew as individuals and as a whole as the season progressed. It was an absolute pleasure coaching this group of student athletes. Rayna Farris and Ariana Fonda earned 2nd Team All-Conference while Lourdes Saunders earned Honorable mention. We want to thank Matt Pecorella for his 7 years of dedication and commitment as the Girls’ Basketball Coach. In his 7 years as head coach, many of his players have made All-Conference and All-State, he has taken multiple teams to the State Tournament, and in the 2019-2020, he led the team to its first Blue Hen Conference Championship in school history. More importantly, Matt provided countless young ladies with a positive experience, helping them not only as basketball players but helping them to grow into productive adults. Matt is hanging up his whistle to spend more time with his wife and two little girls.
Indoor Track
The 2023-2024 Indoor season has come to an end. There were highs and lows, but overall the team did an amazing job. With a team of 50, 17 of them are freshmen. The team is building and moving in the right direction. The team participated in 3 invitationals. These meets helped us to have over 20 athletes participate in the Delaware State Championship meet competing with Delaware’s Top Athletes. The girls’ team finished 13th overall while the boys ended the season ranked 28th.
When you see a Track and Field athlete in the hallways or in class, please congratulate them on a successful Indoor season and wish them luck in the Outdoor season.
Wrestling
The SG Wrestling Team had many ups and downs this season, but finished strong at the end. The Hawks ended with a 14-6 dual meet record and narrowly missed qualifying for the Dual Meet State Tournament. The team had a number of strong performances this year finishing 3rd at the Delmar Invitational, 7th at the Delcastle Invitational, and 2nd at the Cavalier Duals. Leading the way for the Hawks this season was Jahlil Settles (So. 45-14), Nigel Wood (Sr. 43-18), Rusty Lloyd (So. 40-16), Gavin Sheehan (Jr. 38-8), and Odai Morgan (Sr. 38-20). The highlight for the Hawk Wrestlers was winning the Blue Hen Conference Tournament Title, with six finalists and five tournament champions. The Hawks finished 12th overall at the Individual State Tournament with 5 DIAA Placewinners:
138 Gavin Sheehan - Junior- 2nd Place
120 Rusty Lloyd - Sophomore - 4th Place
144 Nick DiTomasso - Junior - 4th Place
126 Nigel Wood - Senior - 6th Place
285 Jahlil Settles - Sophomore - 8th Place
Boys’ Basketball
St. Georges Varsity Boys Basketball season concluded with a state tournament run to the Elite 8. St. Georges defeated Glasgow and Seaford in the first two rounds of the state tournament to advance to the Elite 8. The Hawks battled hard versus eventual state champions Dover. This year's team had 8 players on the varsity team for the first time. Valuable experience was gained during the season and in the state playoffs and should benefit our team in the upcoming season. Domenic Angeloni, Joshua Obiori, and David Crawford received the Crown Trophy Academic Award for the State Tournament.
Senior Class: We say farewell to the Class of 2024: Jaeden Bull, Dominic Angeloni, CJ Burke, Kionne Lang, and Blair Thomas. Thanks to our senior class managers, DJ Henry, Teniya Everrett and Baili Jennings for supporting our team throughout the season.
Governor's Challenge: The Hawks made their annual trek to The Governor's Challenge in Salisbury, Maryland. This event provides great opportunities for our players to compete against top notch out of state competition and evaluated by college coaches, scouts and recruiting services. St. Georges won their Bracket Championship by beating H.D. Woodson from Washington DC and St. John's Catholic Prep from Maryland. Great team win led by Blair Thomas, with 32 points in the championship. Blair Thomas named to the Governor's Challenge All Tournament Team 2024.
SL24: St. Georges participated in the annual SL24 tournament held at the Philadelphia 76ers Fieldhouse. The Hawks defeated Newark in this showcase event.
Blue Hen All Conference Team: The following players were selected by the conference coaches for the All Conference Team 2024. Blair Thomas-First Team, Joshua Obiora-Honorable Mention
Blue Gold Team: Blair Thomas was selected by the Delaware Basketball Interscholastic Coaches Association for the Blue Gold All Star Team. The Blue Gold game honors the top players from the Class of 2024.
Junior Varsity/Freshman Teams: Another successful season for both teams that achieved winning records. The future looks bright as the young Hawks have embraced the St. Georges' tradition and legacy of winning.
Winter Cheer
This season has been an absolute rollercoaster of emotions, challenges, and triumphs! From the first day of practice to our final game, I've witnessed incredible growth, dedication, and teamwork from every member of our squad. We've overcome obstacles, pushed our creative limits, and celebrated victories together. Our bond as a team has never been stronger, and I couldn't be more proud of each and every young lady for their hard work and commitment. Together, we've created unforgettable memories and achieved things we once only dreamed of. As a coach, it's been an honor to lead such an amazing group of young ladies.
