March's Pillar word is COMMUNICATION. What is communication?
From Ms. Raeker
Thank you to everyone who donated to the food drive last month. We collected 1060 items for the Little Food Pantry at Nike!! Due to the generosity of our families, we will now be able to stock the food pantry through the summer months which is AMAZING! Thank you again for being a part of a great community at Nike Elementary! Counseling lessons this month will focus on career exploration. We will be learning about different career options and looking at your student’s interests and strengths. I look forward to these fun lessons that encourage students to dream big.
Feel free to reach out by emailing sraeker@mvr3.k12.mo.us or call 636 271 1444 and ask for Ms. Raeker.
From Nurse Jenny
March is a month that shines light on some very important topics for our student population: nutrition (including the importance of breakfast) and sleep.
There are plenty of age appropriate tasks you can teach your child to be helpful in the kitchen.
This resource breaks it down by age groups. Obviously, safety is key and you know your child best, so until you have seen them work with a utensil like a peeler or a knife, don’t think they will be able to do it just because they fall into these age groups.

It can be a very good bonding experience to let your children help make meals. Not only will you spend time together, but you are teaching them life skills when they are able to make food for themselves as they get older. Let them pick some meal ideas and help carry them out. If kids are part of the process, they are more likely to eat it too! Maybe pick out fruits or vegetables at the store that they have never tried. Try a different type of meat or bread or shape of noodle. Food choices are a great way to broaden your child’s experiences. Make things from scratch instead of processed foods whenever possible. Have a protein, carbohydrate, fruit, vegetable, and dairy product at each meal for a balanced diet. Guardians are likely the biggest influence on a child’s eating choices; help them make smart ones! Studies show that regularly eating breakfast is associated with better academic performance. Without breakfast, kids are more tired and irritable which can lead to behavior and attention problems. Grab and go ideas can be best for families who are busy, so kids can still get the important nutrients they need. Encourage your child to eat breakfast at school if they don’t have time to eat at home. If you are worried about your child’s eating habits, talk to your provider for some ideas. A visit with a registered dietitian can be very helpful in getting on the right track for health goals.
Sleep Awareness Week always follows Daylight Savings Time. It reminds us that there are plenty of ways to try to make falling asleep easier for ourselves and our kids. The amount of sleep you get has been shown to directly affect your mood. People who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to feel symptoms of depression than those who get enough sleep. Here are some things to try if your child is having a hard time falling asleep: Make sure the room is dark (use room darkening shades on windows if needed), cooler room temperatures allow for better sleep, white noises like fans can help block out sounds that might keep them awake. Resist giving tablets, phones or allowing them to watch TV within an hour of bedtime as the blue light tells their brains to stay awake. Using the same routine each night for pajamas, brushing teeth, reading books, etc. helps a child’s brain start the process of winding down for sleep. If you’ve tried all of these things and they are still struggling with sleep, talk to your child’s provider about other options. There is almost nothing better for overall health than getting enough sleep for your body.
MUSIC
Third and Fourth grades are preparing a performance entitled "We're Making Music" on March 21 at 7 pm at Riverbend. Students with speaking parts please arrive no later than 6:30 p.m. dressed in all black. Students in the chorus please arrive no later than 6:45 p.m. wearing all black. We are so excited to show you what we have been working on all these months. See you there!
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me through email at rfenelon@mvr3.k12.mo.us or through the ClassDojo Messenger.
Art
While the pillar word for February may be Respectfulness, in art class the word of the month was Patience! Students finally began the second step in their clay project and glazed pots, cups, bowls…even a couple of tiny snails! I love the clay process and sharing it with students is the BEST! The hard part is the waiting, and they are SO good at being patient about how long the clay process takes.
Looking to help out? We are in need of a few things in the art room:
Paper lunch bags, inexpensive paper plates (or leftover birthday ones), pony beads, and empty paper towel rolls. Anything is appreciated and we thank you for thinking of us!
The bright colors of the glazes (glassy painted coating) always amaze the students. Ask your artist about their clay experience this year!
Communication is key! I can be reached at cpatterson@mvr3.k12.mo.us or by calling the Nike office.
Library
Wow! The end of the year is quickly approaching! We have been busy in the library. The third and fourth grade students have been participating in March Mammal Madness. Students are in teams and they have to determine which mammal will win "battles" to win their division. Then as a class we are completing the bracket to determine who each class picks as the Mammal Champion. This is a fun activity to incorporate teamwork and problem solving.
PreK through second grade are voting for their favorite Show Me Picture book. It looks like the winner for Nike will be I Eat Poop (this is a funny and cute book about accepting who you are). There are ten Show Me Picture books so ask you kiddo which books they liked the best.
Mark your calendars for the upcoming Spring Book Fair. The book fair will be the week of April 8th - 12th and more information will be coming home soon.
PE
Hockey Intramurals are in full swing!

Title Reading
Mrs. Hollstein's class practices reading skills daily focusing on the 5 components of reading. For the month of March, we are focusing on building children's phonological awareness. Attached you will find some activities you can practice at home that focusses on building your child's phonological awareness. Also, it is so important to read at home for 20 minutes. Our goal is to read 3 times a week. At the end of this month, we will have a big celebration for students who receive Title 1 services and are completing their daily reading.
