Message from Principal Heidi Critchley
February went by fast! We just finished the 2nd trimester!
As we are entering our last grading period for the year, I am reflecting on how much our students have grown. This year's 8th grade class traveled through St. Francis Middle School with me as they started middle school when I started at SFMS. They are a great class who we are going to miss so much next year.
We have completed registration with our students for next year. We will be busy working this spring and summer on balancing classes, reviewing student needs, and much more. Scheduling is a huge task, but we are excited that we have registration completed.
Every month our teams select students to honor for student of the month exhibit Saints P.R.I.D.E. The following provides more information about P.R.I.D.E.
- P is for Prepared - How ready are you?
- R is for Respectful - How do you treat others?
- I is for Inclusive - Are you accepting and including others?
- D is for Determined - Are you following the rules? Are you being your best you?
- E is for Engaged - Are you focused on the task at hand?
For each of the words, we have examples or guidance of how to show that a student is "determined" (or any of the words) in different areas of the building. For example, being "determined" in the classroom is staying focused on the assigned task, following class procedures, checking resources to stay caught up, and persevering and trying their best. As we work with our students to be successful students, we recognize and celebrate their successes.
Another way we are helping our students gain the knowledge and skill to be successful is through our "Profile of a Graduate" work. A selected number of Saints Times will be assessed in the areas of essential skills. The following are the essential skills we want middle school students to master before they move on to high school:
Effective Communicator:
Example Descriptors
Respectful
Active Listener
Open-Minded
Critical Thinker and Problem Solver:
Example Descriptors
Problem-solver
Decision Maker
Reflective
Productive Collaborator:
Example Descriptors
Communicator
Adaptable
Organized
Growth mindset:
Example Descriptors
Self-disciplined
Perseverance
Ownership of Attitude
Emotionally Intelligent:
Example Descriptors
Self-aware
Self-regulated
Socially-Aware
We will be providing our students with information on how they are progressing in these areas. Students will receive an "E" for exhibiting the essential skill or an "OI" meaning it is an opportunity for improvement. We will send information to those Saints Time classes that will be piloting it this spring.
Remember to change your clocks!
Late start on March 20th!
