March 2024
Planting a Rainbow
The library has begun "Planting a Rainbow". Classes have been reading books about seeds and plants and have continued the learning process by planting our own seeds. This has allowed us to begin using our greenhouse, located on the back playground. Students are excited to see seeds begin to sprout and grow. We have raised planters to be assembled and filled if you are interested in volunteering with our greenhouse project or would like to donate materials. Please contact Mrs. Sprinkle for more information at bsprinkle@wcs.k12.va.us.
Run Club
Run Club is well underway with just under fifty students training twice a week to build running endurance as they prepare for a 5K run at the end of the season. The coaches are seeing the runners put in a great effort, staying positive, and building friendships with students across grade levels. On May 5, runners will take part in the Mendota River Run 5K.
Music in Our Schools Month
March is Music in Our Schools Month. To celebrate, fourth and fifth graders presented a recorder concert on Thursday, March 14. Fourth grade performed "Hot Cross Buns," featuring Autumn C, Emma C, Lynnleigh H, Raymond W, Jace H, Levi J, and Gage W. in small ensemble, and "GABAGAn's Reel." Fifth graders performed "Good Boy Blues," featuring Jacobi W. and Emily S. on improvisation, and "Ode to Joy." In honor of Read Across America Week, fourth and fifth grade came together to present an orchestrated presentation of the book Prairie Chicken Little by Jackie Mims Hopkins using recorders, ukeleles, xylophones, and bucket drums.
4-H History Bowl
The 4-H History Bowl was held on March 19. Students in fourth grade competed on teams answering questions about Virginia history. The winning team was made up of Connor W, Sidney M, Levi W, Elijah H, and Waylon B. This team will move on go compete with other teams from the county on April 16.
GES Talent Showcase
This year's GES Talent Showcase will take place during Creative Arts Night on Thursday, April 11 at 6:00 p.m. We invite any student to share his or her talent (music, dance, theatre, etc.). This is NOT a competition. It is a high quality showcase to "show off" the many talents we have here at Greendale Elementary. Participants must be able to prepare their own act /performance independently. In addition, all entrants will need to meet with Mrs. Gates prior to the showcase to have their act/performance reviewed to be sure the participant is well-prepared and ready for the showcase. Each participant must complete this form (linked below) and submit it. Once received, Mrs. Gates will review the forms and meet with each participant to review his or her act. If you have any questions, you may email Mrs. Gates at cgates@wcs.k12.va.us
Faculty vs Students Basketball Game
The faculty/student basketball game was held on March 22. Fifth grade students participated in several responsibilities in preparation for the game. Of course, many students served as athletes in the game, but other students served on the pep band, cheer squad, media crew, and creating signs and banners for the game. After a very tight second half, the fifth graders came out on top with a score of 39-38. Maybe next year, teachers.
