Staff Spotlight
Dr. Derek Fialkiewicz, Superintendent
Q: What's your favorite food?
A: Definitely pizza. Whenever I travel, I have to try the best pizza place in the area. My favorite pizza includes cheese, mushrooms, and pepperoncinis. Pizza from Buffalo, NY is the best in the world, but I am a little biased.
Q: Do you have any hidden talents or hobbies?
A: I can toss food in the air and catch it in my mouth. In college, I tossed and caught 50 raisins in a row. I also used to be the lead singer of a classic rock cover band and have acted in a few short films.
Q: What three items would you take with you to a deserted island?
A: First, there would have to be WiFi on the island. I would take my laptop so I could watch all of the hockey and football games (Go Bills! Go Knights Go! Go Sabres!). I would also take a deck of Krypto cards (an arithmetic card game). The most important thing I would take, though, is my wife. She is my best friend and I couldn't imagine being somewhere without her. I know it is sappy, but it is true, and she didn't force me to write this...
Q: What's the best part of your job?
A: Watching our students grow from silly little children into productive adults. The best part of every day is walking into classrooms and watching our amazing students and teachers. That is where the magic happens.
Q: What show are you currently binge-watching?
A: I have no idea how I never watched Modern Family while it was on TV. I am in the middle of Season 10 right now and every episode makes me laugh hysterically. It is a great way to relax.
I absolutely love living in Corbett. Moving here was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I am a firm believer that things happen for a reason, and I believe I am in Corbett to positively affect not only our students, but myself. Thank you, Corbett, for being so welcoming.
Get to know Dr. Fialkiewicz better at the Grange on Tuesday!

Robotics team finishes 2024 season
The Corbett High School robotics team, Cardinal Dynamics, completed their regular season as part of the FIRST Robotics Competition with their final tournament on Friday 3/22 and Saturday 3/23. The team worked hard hoping to secure a spot in the PNW District championship, but came up short by just a few places. However this season will count as one of the team’s most successful with one tournament win (Clackamas Academy 2/29-3/1) and their highest regional placing ever. The team finished the 2024 season ranked 53 out of 148 teams throughout Washington and Oregon. If you would like to learn more about the team email Mr. Goude zgoude@corbett.k12.or.us or visit the team website corbett.k12.or.us/robotics.
Corbett competes in the M3 Challenge, a Mathworks Math Modeling Challenge
Team applauded by judges for technical computing
Corbett HS Math team recently competed in the M3 Challenge, a Mathworks Math Modeling Challenge. The team spent 14 hours working through modeling predictions on the housing market and trends in unhoused populations in Seattle and Albuquerque. The judges sent back the following remarks:
"Dear Coach Binschus and student members of Team #18174,
Of the 655 papers submitted in this year’s MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge, your team’s paper was one of 302 papers considered for a technical computing award. The code in your paper was read and analyzed by professional judges who examined all the papers vying for technical computing awards. Although your team was not selected for a scholarship prize, the judges commend your efforts in the category of technical computing.
We applaud your team’s efforts to include code in this year’s M3 Challenge and hope to see your school participate again next year. "
