Cougars on the Stage!
The North Putnam Thespians brought the class story "The Wizard of Oz" to life on the North Putnam stage on April 12, 13, and 14th. The students did a great job learning their lines, choreography, and songs. We hope you had the opportunity to check it out. If not, check out the pictures below to get a sense for the performances that took place.
We would like to thank the production staff: Mr. Bond, Mr. Wunderlick, Mrs. Asher, Mr. Wargel, Mrs. Shippy, and Mrs. Mindiola for all the time and dedication with our HS and MS students. We would also like to thank the corporate sponsor, Greene Realty, for supporting this performance.

ICC - Competency #1 - Speaking & Listening
The Indiana College Core (ICC) is a block of 30 credit hours of college-level coursework in six competency areas. The Indiana College Core allows HS students to enter college as a sophomore, allowing students to have more options when they arrive on campus, whether that's a 2 year or 4 year program. The six competency areas that students must receive a minimum of 3 credit hours (1 course) in are:
- Speaking and Listening
- Written Communication
- Quantitative Reasoning
- Scientific Ways of Knowing
- Social and Behavioral Ways of Knowing
- Humanistic Ways of Knowing
In this issue we will look at the first competency, Speaking and Listening. In order for students to complete this competency they must earn at least 3 credit hours, or one high school course in this competency. At NPHS we have two different ways for students to meet this competency. The first is through our partnership with Ivy Tech CC. Starting in the fall, students have the opportunity to take Comm 102, Introduction to Interpersonal Communication (3 credit hours) via a synchronous online course offered at NPHS. This course is free of charge.
The second way students could meet this competency is by enrolling in a course through Indiana Online entitled, SP203 Effective Speaking. This dual credit course is offered through Trine University.
Either option will meet the need of competency #1 and is provided at no cost to NPHS students.
Cougar Power
Cougar Power was a program initiated in 2023 by a senior student and Mrs. Parent at Bainbridge Elementary. In 2023 we had 14 high school seniors who met weekly with a "buddy" at Bainbridge Elementary. The purpose of the program was to provide a high school peer who they could get to know and develop a positive relationship with. As the year went on, the peer and buddy relationship would grow and the students learned how to have a positive relationship with another student. While there were to be no academics during this time, the impact of this program had a profound impact on student academics in the elementary grades. Our elementary buddies started to behave better in class, and developed better peer relationships which led to better academic achievement. This year 20+ senior students are a part of this program, and we expanded to Roachdale Elementary. Our high school peers are changing the culture of learning at the elementary schools one meeting at a time.

Call for Teen Court Volunteers
Teen Court is a program run by the Putnam County Youth Development Commission. Teen Court gives juvenile offenders the opportunity to be tried by their peers for crimes committed at school or within our community. Teen Court volunteers are given the opportunity to serve as prosecutors, defense counselors, jurors, etc. This is a great way for students to get involved in the community and learn more about the judicial system. If you would like more information or an application to become a Teen Court Volunteer, please see someone in our Student Services Department.
