THE CHAMPS ARE HERE!
What a winter season it has been for the Hurricanes athletic teams! As the winter season came to a close, we went out with a BANG.. Your Marian Central Catholic Wrestling team won the IHSA 1A Team Dual State Championship! Its Marian Central's first team state championship in school history. With the season being long and challenging, it is easy to forget about other accomplishments this team has provided this year. The wrestling program won Abe's rumble down in Springfield early in the season and beat Coal City (the team we would wrestle for state). We then won the inaugural CCC conference championship back in January, and then went on to win the IHSA regional which qualified the team for sectionals. Before the team competed in sectionals, we had 8 individuals qualify for the individual state tournament. We had two win individual state championships, Jimmy Mastny and Brayden Teunissen. We had 6 total place at the individual state tournament; one 2nd place, one 3rd place, one 4th place, and one 6th place. Marian had 6 all-state performers this season. To finish the year, the boys went to Sterling Newman and handled Byron in the sectional dual sending them to state. We beat Leroy to send us to the semifinals of state and confirming a top 4 finish in state. We won a tough match up against Roxanna and put us up against the defending state champs Coal City. Marian won several big matches early in the dual that put us up for good and won their first state title as a team ever. The future is bright for this team and we look forward to continued success. Congrats men!
Not to be outmatched, but our girls basketball team continued a strong program run of success under coach Lee again this winter. Our girls had some big wins as a team throughout the year and even had an individual break the 1,000 point mark this season. Madison Kenyon became the fourth girl in school history to join the 1,000-point club. She will be missed greatly next season as she will be graduating this May. Our girls' team won the regional title in a barn burner game against Byron and advanced to sectionals. The girls came up short against Alleman but played tough till the end. The girls broke the single game wins record of 25 that they set last season by reaching 27 wins in the year. Our program is strong and coach Lee and his staff will be looking to get that title they are striving for soon.
Spring season has kicked off and the kids have hit the ground running. We have several new coaches this spring and are really looking forward to seeing the success from our winter sports carry over to the spring.
