MLC Weekly News and Notes
April 22-26
Hello, MLC community! It feels great to end the week in the sunshine! With K-5 spring conferences behind us, we are heading into the homestretch for summer break, which is definitely on the minds of our students and staff. But...we still have eight weeks of learning, experiences and fun this school year...let's finish out strong!
This week is pretty normal with the grand finale of the MLC Prom Friday night! We are prepping for two upcoming overnight field trips (4x5 & 8th) as well as Outdoor School for 6th graders.
Two reminders:

PTSA Annual Used Book Faire Benefiting MLC Library
When: Thursday May 2, 8am-6pm & Friday May 3, 8am-2pm
Where: MLC Library
Why: Raising funds to support our MLC Library! We're hoping to update the library shelf signs to help students find and access the books better and we're also looking to purchase our 2024-2025 OBOB books for both 3x5 and the 6x8.
How to donate: There is a donation cart set up in the front hallway near the main bulletin board and there are boxes outside the K-6 classrooms.
What to donate: Please keep the demographics of our students (K-12) and staff in mind. Early readers, YA, graphic novels, popular fiction, non-fictions and “how-to” books are great! No board books, baby books or old textbooks. Please also only donate gently used books that are in good condition. We love our volunteers, please do not create extra work by donating moldy, badly torn or damaged books that will need to be disposed of at the end of the sale. Books can not be recycled.
Volunteer: We need help leading up to and during the event! Contact Tammy Chan to help sort and organize next week or SIGN UP HERE to assist with setting up in advance or staffing the book faire.

More than just a fundraiser, Grow Together is a celebration of the strong bonds that unite us. Last year, our return to post-pandemic gatherings with the "Come Together" auction reaffirmed the importance of community. As we continue to strengthen our connections and sow the seeds for another fruitful year, we invite everyone to become more rooted in relationships and "Grow Together." Tickets are available starting at $0 with tiered pricing designed for inclusion. It is important to us that all families feel welcome. *Please note that the event is 21+. Please reach out if needing childcare is a barrier to your attendance.*
We can’t do it without you! Check out the info handout that should have come home with your student to read more about ways in which you can support Grow Together. Contact Sierra Stringfield Perryman with any questions.
Get your tickets: Secure your ticket by April 30 to be entered into a drawing for a $50 Shake Shack gift card! It’s helpful to have a rough headcount as we make final preparations so secure your spot now!
Host a Buy-In Party: Host an event and help our community connect!
Donate to the silent and live auctions or our Wine Wall: Contribute your time, talent, or treasure! Especially seeking MLC families who have services or skills to offer, as well as additional vacation homes, hotels, or cabins for staycations and nearby getaways.
Volunteer: We have many volunteer opportunities before, during, and after the event. Reach out to get involved now or stay tuned for more info and a sign-up sheet!
Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week May 6-10: Thank You for Helping Us Grow!
We are planning a variety of activities to show our teachers and staff how much we appreciate them and in the coming weeks we will share suggestions for low and no-cost actions students and families can participate in to help us celebrate! Stay tuned for a handout being sent home with students next week for more details.
Messages of Gratitude: One of our days will be all about helping teachers and staff FEEL THE LOVE and we invite all families to contribute as many notes as you desire! For more info and directions, check out the Messages of Gratitude Flier and the Complete Staff List.
Please contact Sierra with any questions, or to volunteer with TSAW efforts.
Join the Parking Crew for May and June
The MLC PTSA hosts parking in our school lots for Timbers and Thorns games and we need volunteers! Shifts are short and we will be there to teach you everything you need to know. For every shift you volunteer, we will enter your name into a drawing for a prize (Timbers tickets, Oaks Park skating passes, and more). Thanks to our generous donors for these fun incentives. Sign up HERE with a friend or come make new ones!
Questions? Contact our coordinators, Tammy or Chenney.
Earth Week BottleDrop Give
BottleDrop is celebrating Earth Week with BottleDrop Give, a combination of matching funds and a social media contest (so please do post on our behalf!). MLC PTSA will be eligible to receive a 20% match on all deposits made with our Blue Bags between April 22 – May 4. If you’ve been saving up your cans, bottles, and other refundables, grab some Blue Bags from one of three locations at MLC (or have your student do so) and load them up to drop off at your nearest deposit site. 20% can mean a lot when we all make significant returns during this time period (however, we encourage everyone to only return 1-3 bags per day to ensure we are not exceeding the total daily limit set by BottleDrop). It can also mean a lot to help our planet!
Reach out to Adam Perryman with any questions.
IS IT YOU? We Need PTSA Board Members for Next Year
The MLC PTSA will be holding elections on June 4 for board positions for the 2024-25 school year. We are looking for candidates for:
President - 2 year term
Vice President - 2 year term
Secretary - 1 year term (to finish out current term)
The PTSA is a great way to meet new families, get to know staff better, and to ensure that our teachers and students are supported. No prior board experience is required -- just a love for your kids and our school community. We hope to have some new parents join us and would LOVE to see more families get involved! If you are interested in serving, or just want any more information about the positions and what they are responsible for, please contact current President Jeremy Booth.

SCHOOL UPDATES AND NEWS
Changes for 2024-25
PPS schools have changes in scheduling and staffing for the 2024-25 school year.
MLC is exploring a full day on Friday for students and staff to accommodate the changes in the contract as a result of bargaining as well as FDA rules regarding lunch not being served on a half day.
PPS recently sent an email with new start and end times for all schools. We are an MPG school (Multiple Pathways to Graduation) so we are able to decide which model works best for us. When we have more information and our schedule is decided, we will share with our community.
Volunteers needed in the library!
Our library needs some love.
Here are some of the projects we are working on:
- Shelving books
- Weeding out old or damaged books
- Cleaning up the shelves so the books are in the correct places
- Book displays, bulletin boards, general decor updating
If any of these seems like something you can help with, send Molly an email msoloway@pps.net

TOURS AND ENROLLMENT
MLC Tours for Interested Students & Families
Exploring school options to determine the best fit for a student can be both exciting and anxiety producing. We believe getting to actually see the surrounding location and have a guided tour of the building can be very helpful in this decision-making process. To accommodate the numerous requests for tours, we offer a monthly tour for up to 10 interested families on the second Thursday of each month at 4:00 pm and will last approximately 45-60 minutes.
May 9
Please email Benner, our 7-12 counselor to initiate the sign up process or if you have any questions. gbenner@pps.net
When the lottery dates are announced we will also host an evening open house event for families. Please check our website for updates.
