April 5, 2024
We are looking forward to a spectacular solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, from 2:15 PM - 4:38 PM. This rare event is a wonderful opportunity to marvel at the wonders of the universe. Students will be leaving school shortly before or during the event. As part of our commitment to educational experiences that inspire curiosity and discovery, we are providing all APS students with special viewing glasses to safely observe the eclipse.
What is a solar eclipse?
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth. The result is the blocking of the sun, creating a darkened sky. (science.nasa.gov)
How can I enjoy the eclipse safely?
Our priority is safety, so please remember to follow these important safety precautions. Looking at the sun directly without safe viewing glasses will result in eye injury.
Wear approved viewing glasses. These glasses are specially designed to protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun during an eclipse. Regular sunglasses do not provide adequate protection.
Supervise children to ensure they are wearing viewing glasses properly.
Take breaks. Viewing the eclipse for an extended period of time can strain your eyes.
Do not use cameras or binoculars (unless they are equipped with specifically designed solar filters). Using an unfiltered device can cause eye injury.
We encourage families to discuss eye safety for an eclipse and to remind students that viewing the eclipse without special glasses can have long term health impacts. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the solar eclipse or the viewing glasses provided, please contact your principal. We are committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable learning experience for our students during this exciting event.
Updated Guidance for Respiratory Viral Illnesses
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) has updated recommendations for schools and the general public to prevent the spread of any respiratory viruses. There are no longer any statewide isolation or quarantine requirements for those who test positive for COVID-19. This aligns with the March 1, 2024, updated guidelines released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The new guidance applies to any respiratory viral illness such as Covid, Flu or RSV. Symptoms of a viral illness include fever, chills, fatigue, cough, runny nose, and headache.
The new guidance states that even with a positive Covid test, individuals may return to school/work and resume normal activities when:
● they have not had a fever for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) AND
● symptoms are improving.
For additional information – please refer to the student handbook under “School and Illness: When your Child Should Stay Home.”
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your school nurse.

Welcome to Spring Art Adventures!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this message finds you and your family well and ready to embrace the beauty of spring! As we transition into this vibrant season, I wanted to take a moment to update you on the exciting art happenings in our school.
Springtime offers a plethora of inspiration for our young artists, from the colorful blooms of flowers to the energetic buzz of life returning to nature. In our art classes, we aim to capture this spirit of renewal and creativity through various projects and explorations.
Here are some highlights of what your child can look forward to in our art program this spring:
Outdoor Sketching: With the weather warming up, we plan to take advantage of our school's outdoor spaces for some plein air sketching sessions. Students will have the opportunity to observe and sketch the beauty of nature firsthand, allowing them to connect with their surroundings in a meaningful way.
Spring-themed Projects: From vibrant watercolor paintings of blooming flowers to whimsical sculptures inspired by animals in nature, our students will delve into a variety of spring-themed art projects. These projects will not only encourage creative expression but also foster an appreciation for the natural world.
Earth Day Celebration: As stewards of our planet, it's important for our students to understand the importance of environmental conservation. In honor of Earth Day, we will be incorporating eco-friendly art projects into our curriculum, using recycled materials to create beautiful works of art that promote sustainability and environmental awareness.
I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to guide your child on their artistic journey this spring. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Together, we can make this a memorable and enriching experience for our young artists.
Thank you for your continued support,
Ms. Dickson K-4 Art Specialist
